Apparently the IOC changed their rules in 1996 to only allow sovereign states to compete. Because Hong Kong did not have a clear sovereignty at the time, it was grandfathered in as its own team. If this all happened after 1997, then Hong Kong would probably have been included in the Chinese team. I think China should sort this out sooner or later, at the very least after 2047 there should be no question of a separate Hong Kong team.

Sigh .. I knew it was too good to be true. I really wanted to believe but this is why I'm still pessimistic.

This is also why I don't take France seriously on it's attempts to act as a superpower. Since Napoleon they don't really know how to win when it counts.

I'm still proud it's better than Tokyo though and progress was made.

Having more Chinese teams actually works for China because for certain sports there are more Chinese players in competition. That in theory can reduce the chance for the non-Chinese teams.

In race against the West, China does not need to include HK and Taipei for the medals tally. Same as for GDP or any social and economic metrics. It is a competition between the two systems.

Being ahead only by 1 gold isn't a fair ranking anyways because that's saying a single gold is worth dozens of silver and bronze medals.

There is too much variance and luck involved so the measurement for success for Olympic teams should be how well you maintain your dominant sports and your breakthroughs.

To people who make it to the final stages, 1 gold is better than 999 silvers. Do you want to be remembered in history as the world champion or just the guy who was almost world champion 10 times? Hell just look at now, how much would you give for China to have just one more gold at the moment?

China fell short. That's just a harsh fact. What's hoping is lessons are learnt so next time China will be the champion.

1 gold is greater than 100 silver and bronze. They shouldn’t even include bronze. Give gold for the winner and silver to runner up.

I kinda agree, in the ancient Greek olympiad, the runners-up got absolutely nothing.

If we compare China’s results over time, it’s definitely the best foreign result ever. Outside of Beijing 2008, which had a home field advantage, China has never looked stronger relative to the US. It’s an improvement over Tokyo where it was already close, so nothing to be sad about especially without the virus as an excuse / factor.

But outside of China what is more interesting is the rise of Japan to a consistent third place. Japan was not that strong and used to be more around South Korea’s level. I wonder what changed there other than the Tokyo effect. We’ll see if they keep it up in 2028 I guess.
