I wouldn't describe China's chance as "very low". The US has been dropping the ball left and right.
The remaining events are mostly pretty solid

2 x relays are definitely US gold unless they screw up baton passing again, but in 400m that's more unlikely
2 x basketballs are definitely US gold
1 x hurdles(?) > I remember someone saying there is one more solid event for US

After this they will already have 38 matching China

After this they still have ~6 not-guaranteed but pretty high chance events:
1 in women's volleyball, ~1 in women's football, ~1 in C2 women's 200m, 1 in women's omnium, ~1 in wrestling 65/97kg, ~1 in golf
while China only has ~1 chance in boxing

Can't leave out weightlifting. US just won a gold in weightlifting in an event where there was no Chinese competitor.

Who the hell made this stupid rule that a country can't even field one single athlete in every event in weightlifting. How is this justified? Why is China not protesting? The rules for number of athletes should be uniform, if China can only enter athletes in half of the weight lifting events, the US should also be able to enter only half of the swimming events.

This is true to an extent in badminton, table tennis too where max of 2 athletes are allowed. But I am okay with this compromise, but this should be followed in all events of every sport. So no more 3 koreans in archery, or 3 french in canoe event.

Almost no kid starts practicing sports with pole vault or 100 meter sprint, after all.

After the swimming, the most engaging event I have seen to date has been the women's pole vault final, mostly for the different personalities and methods of dealing with stress from the athletes between each attempt. From the ever-smiling Eliza McCartney (New Zealand), to the theatrical showmanship of Alysha Newman (Canada), Katie Moon's (USA) resting bitch face and Nina Kennedy (Australia) prowling around the field like a caged tiger. Also for the moments of strategy whereby athletes pass an attempt at a lower height that would still leave them trailing the leaders in favour of a high-risk, high-reward attempt at a higher height which, if successful, would put them in a commanding position. Unfortunately even the "full replays" that I have seen of the event cut out most of the "between jumps" time that made the event so fascinating, but in any case it is definitely worth a look with some amazing athleticism on display.

I'd rather have US no1 then taken away by WADA. That will be way more humiliating. Take everything from them in Athens, Beijings, London, Rio and Tokyo as well.

Yeah, as I said, with the nonsense like:
  1. ban on Russia,
  2. addition of US-favoured events (in addition to already excessive swimming and track events)
  3. removal of Chinese-favoured events,
  4. American TUE doping (asthma, ADHD) by Simone Biles, Noah Lyles, swimming team
  5. USADA-covered up doping,
  6. fake doping attacks on Chinese swimming team
America really pulled out all the stops and their influence (bribery and blackmail probably) in sporting organisations this year to change the rules to their favour. They were hoping for it to be a repeat of 1984 and to solidify "US dominance" to the world.

And yet they're not even doing that much better than China, it's a miracle for China already

admit it, you watch the ladies pole vault because they are hot. (me too :)) some of these track events definitely tunes the bodies to be very aesthetically pleasing. Once they stop fooling around and get into it, you are like, WOW!

7. Purposefully excessive and disruptive testing of Chinese athletes.

China beat the US 3-2 in womens volleyball in their group. Poland, China and Indonesia are stronger than the US in sport climbing.
Why did Chinese born Tian Minwei, table tennis player for Korea, change her name to Jeon Ji-hee?
