Realistically was China the favorites to win the 4x100m freestyle relays or was it always US/Aus?

I wonder which swimming ones they can they get gold in.

The state of Aus media. Anything to bring down their rivals.
The reason they are trying so hard to smear China in swimming is because swimming is basically THE lifeblood of the anglo countries like US/UK/AUS.

It's a sport they had a natural advantage in (rich + lots of land = more swimming pools) so they inflated it with a ridiculous number of medals. You can tell because it's one of the only sports where athletes can consistently take part in and win multiple events a year (eg Phelps, Caeleb, Ledecky)

Losing this would destroy their bragging rights and the myth of western domination at sports.

Whoever wins swimming is ultimately the winner of the Olympics. So of course they would seethe China is catching up like they do with semiconductors etc.

I rechecked the results. It seems China was never really in the running for winning the 4X100m relay for freestyle historically. They looked good in the prelims coz the best guys weren't used from the US etc. Its now up to the individuals like Pan Zhele and Qin Haiyang to show they can deliver on the final stage. As well as the medley relays.

So maybe its wrong to say they are significantly underperforming. Rather its just we were too hopeful.
