North Korea to increase 'Military Deterent'.

Personally i'm supportive of a peaceful reunification of Korea, and i'm sure China is too.

However for this to happen, NKorea must be better developped and more economically stable, which would require the help of both China and SKorea, if not then it would be the same as German reunification, much worse if a war happened, in such a scenario SKorea's economy would suffer horribly, having to pay for the damages and reconstruction of the north, along with dealing with mass refugees.

If the first scenario were to happen though, SKorea would no longer need the US as a major ally, largely because their alliance is based on the fact that the South needs to be protected from the North, without the North, the South will seek greater independence from the US, and i doubt the US will be able to maintain its miltiary presence on the grounds of the China threat, i think the SKorean government will be mroe likely to see China as an important ally and trade partner in the future.

I take you heard that the U.S. has reactivated its missile defence system. Now it's considering deploying patriot missile systems to defend Japan. Not that either will make much difference though. The national defence system hasn't been tested succesfully yet, and Patriot missiles weren't very successful in defending Israel against Saddam's SCUDs during the Gulf War.

KCNA is a load of crap! Have you read any of it? But I'm surprised that South Koreans have been protesting against the North Korean nuclear program. I mean, I haven't heard anything about them protesting human rights abuses there at all!

Cut the political BS!!!

The BBC doesn't usually talk about anti-DPRK protests in South Korea, but hera are a few pics KCNA would never dare show from South Korea.

P.S. sorry for double posting, but I didn't know how to edit previous image and quote at the same time.

Apparently the SM-3 has successfully killed a simulation BM(from popeye's post in the US military picture thread). I hope America will try to use this along with SM-2s(I do not know of the flight profile of either of the 3 missiles though.) on the TPD-2. (If successful, that will further weaken the DPRK's moral.)

NOW, DON'T GO OFF TALKING ABOUT THE KCNA!

As for the double post, huh?

Is China prepared to defend itself from the TPD2?

I mean heck N Korea will not fire at China...but I mean given that the US has clearly stated it has the ability to intercept the missile, can China intercept the missile as well?

China got S-300 and S-400 SAM, both comparable if not better than the latest Patriots. I know the Chinese govt aren't expecting a missile at them, but are Chinese SAM batteries on high alert in these coming days?

Well, China doesen't have S-400, the whole system isen't operational yet and the chinese aqustions are merely rumours...

And anyway this interception fuzz is rather bizzard to me...I mean are you really expecting NK to launch the missile towards USA? They are alledgely making a missile test, a trial which purpose is to test the missiles capapilityes...everyone is acting like the target area is located in US soil. If the missile have the range to reach there, that still doesen't mean that the a missiletest will be aimed to there. It's ridicilous to think so, becouse if NK would do it, then we wouldn't here talking about missile interception, but counterstrikes...

Well the last test was fired over Japan, so for the U.S. government, theres a good reason to believe that they'll do the same thing with America, although as you said, North Korea would probably be just as likely to fire it into the pacific rather than the U.S.A.
But it has to be remembered the intention behind these programmes - the missiles are bargaining chips for negotiations - the North Korean philosophy is that they are the key to a major deal. Firing a missile over Alaska would be a good demonstration of this, as well as propaganda value.

But my point is that the missiles maxium range can reach to Alaska or Hawaji...It doesen't left much room for "shootin over", the missile can reach USA, but it cannot "fly over" without falling on US soil...and that certainly isen't the purpose of any missile test in any country.

Well I think that China would be the nation that profited most from a reunification. Obviously the North would cease to exsist, the South would have to absorb one of the worlds poorest and most backward countries into its highly advanced and modern economy, and the US would lose its greatest source of influence of South Korea. China is already SK's biggest trade partner, and without the threat of annihilation by the guy with the pointy hair (Kim Jong Il) hanging over their heads, the South Koreans wouldn't have much of a reason to listen to the United States anymore*************************. South Korea would drift into China's orbit, regardless of the little dispute over pickled cabbage China and South Korea are having right now.

No need to insult any countries military

By the way, Fox News here in the US now opens any North Korea story with a big obnoxious graphic with NK soldiers martching, Kim waving and a missle launching. Then these big words that say "North Korean Menace" fly on the screen. Its all set to loud, threatening music. Corny, yes, but it reminds me a bit of the run-up to the Second Iraq War, or whatever it is called. Can we please decided on an offical name for that odd conflict in Iraq? I nominate 2nd Iraq War.

I also believe China would be one of the biggest benefactors of a united Korea. The only problem I can see (from a China POV) is what kind of stance (new) Korea would take in East Asia, whether or not it would want to get more assertive(?) remains to be seen. Then again, dragging around the North's all but dead carcass for a few years before getting it back on its feet would be quite a burden for SK.

So yeah. Reunification of North/South Korea is great for China, and really bad for the US. Ah well. It's not as if the students in SK are really fond of US troops there anyway...

And I vote for "The Iraq Fiasco."
