Just a thought on the long range missile. I understand that it failed after 40 seconds.

So a question for all you missile buffs: is that long enoung to test the second stage firing? If so, you cannot discount the possibility of the launch being deliberatly terminated by North Korea in order to defuse the political situation.

I am assuming that the other missiles were all single stage but used the same guidance targeting systems etc. If that is the case, then these features would have been satisfactually tested by the short range missiles. All they had to do with the Ta-Dong?? was to test the multi-stage ignition.

No I am not propaganderising, I am simply presenting a logical alternative explaination.
A long range missiles such as Taepodong usually needs many tests before a trully sucessful test and NK would need to continue to test many more times before missiles were proving reliable. Every tests in the process would be a step closer to a trully mature long range missiles, NK might just want to see how close they were getting.

That is plain stupid. Such threats are not going to work. Indeed it might actually result in North Korea getting hurt. Japan has imposed sanctions and is considering "regulating" remittances from North Koreans in Japan back home. That would seriously hurt North Korea's income
I think NK knew of the consequences, but decides to go ahead anyway. Japan's sanctions won't hurt NK overly much.

If North Korea ever was able to present itself as a real threat to the US, rather than just a potential one, Pyongyang would be reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes.
A long range missiles and nuclear warheads would only make NK a bigger potential threat, and NK would have more leverages in the negotiation.

US will only reduce Pyongyang into a rubble, unless NK attacks directly at US's soils. Eventhough Kim is very unpreditable, I don't think he is insane. On contrary, US and Japan might wants to avoid any regional confrontations or conflicts with NK, since there are just too much interests at risks now.

I don't question US's capabilities to completely destory NK, but if there are just a slight of chances and possibilities. That NK could have the potential to cause great damages to Japan and SK, Japan, SK and Japan would be reluctant or dare to engage War with NK unless it is absolutely unavoilable.

red neck....ouch. Hey Golly ya got a tanning bed for the winter way up there near the arctic circle?

Any way back to the military aspect of this or the real question. Is there a military Aspect to this? We know that NK can launch several SCUD type missiles into the sea of japan. AND we also know that their very long range missile appears not to work right now. Sooooooo we kind of know what we knew 5 years ago and thanks to NK a little more. I dont think this benefited them at all. Other than pound Seoul with arty/ missile and nuclear weapons (Maybe) what else could the north do to cause real harm to one of its neighbors? I think its military is stuck back in the mid 50s and 60s and pose little threat.

.

No arguement and it probably just blew up. I was just wondering with what the dismissive and contemptuous public statements from the US would have been replaced with had the missile succesfully flown 9000 miles, km??

Thats why I am wondering whether NK may have tested the components they were interested in, but without upping the stakes to far (and still leaving a degree of uncertainty about its capabilities)

Hi Ute

Long time no see, do let me know if you decide to go into the Import business.:D

something seldom mentioned is that NK is no where near actual weaponization of the package. The TPD-1/2 carried what? A radio transmitter?

Much more interesting is Iran's project.

DPRK launches its missiles

I was reading on Yahoo! World News about North Korea testing its missiles, but failed after 35-40 seconds after launch. Plus, this was during the 4th of July... American Independance Day.

Do you guys think the NK's did this intentionally on that day?

Just note there are reports on the wires this morning saying ROK papers are saying there be up to three more missiles "on the stands" for more tests, and NBC is apparently reporting one of them might be another Taepodong.

(updated 1130 China time)

HONG KONG (MarketWatch, Dow Jones wire) -- North Korea may be preparing further missile tests a day after it carried out seven launches that provoked international outrage and drew threats of sanctions and a possible U.N. resolution, according to reports.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Thursday morning that North Korea had as many as four missiles on launch pads, citing Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung.

"There is a possibility that North Korea will fire additional missiles," Yoon was quoted as saying.

South Korean newspapers have reported that the missiles being prepared are short- to medium-range.

There were also reports that North Korea was readying a Taepodong-2 long-range ballistic missile. However, a Japanese government spokesman said Thursday morning there were no signs of this, according to reports.
On Wednesday, North Korea launched seven missiles, all of which fell into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula. Six of them, including a Taepodong-2 believed capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to parts of the U.S., were launched pre-market, while a seventh flew after regional markets closed.

The long-range missile reportedly fell apart after less than a minute of flight.

Apparently North Korea admitted today it tested the missiles on its media, and showed a cartoon missile. But I looked on KCNA and there is still no mention. North Korea is now planning more launches, since activity has been spotted, and theres also rumours a second Taepodong 2 is being prepared. Two useful articles with good videos to suppourt this:

Bush sounded pretty depressed or subdued when he reacted. Stress, I guess.

I came across some interesting sentiments in The Times today about the NK crisis. Note the ones concerning the changing nature of the JSDF. Perhaps China should consider whether it values friendship with a whacko state like North Korea over avoiding an arms race with the world's second largest economy.

Heading in a dangerously forbidden and off topic direction again Mr Fu.

But here is a question for you to consider in private: If the Japanese dog were to be let off the chain, who might be the most concerned by this prospect?

You can PM me your answer if you want.
