I agree. It's just CCP should be careful of appearing appeasing the foreigners too much.
I doubt that this policy of appeasement will really change. CCP care a lot about relation with US, and that constrain its action.
This is why US think China has more to lose in this confrontation game.

Is that why the CCP is bending over asking the Americans to shaft us deeper with no lube as the White House slaps sanction after sanction against Chinese tech firms? I can't see how sanctioning Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Raytheon in retaliation works towards appeasing the Americans.

In a perfect world I'm sure the CCP would want to work with America and the West, because the product of 1+1 will always be greater than 2, and more importantly the world benefits from it. That said not only are the US refusing to see us as an equal, they're determined to destroy the very fabric of the CCP that has seen millions alleviated from poverty and the elevation of China into the number two spot in the world. The CCP's core priority is to protect Chinese national interests, regardless of Sino-American relations - our track record of countering American hegemony in the Korean War, standing up against Taiwan independence, countering Indian aggression, as well as defending our interests in the South China Sea goes on to prove that.

Anyways rant over, let's go back to discussing tech and scientific breakthroughs.

And these sanctions will do what exactly....

Inflict supply chain as well as financial pain. Boeing will be in extreme pain if it lost the China market. Lockheed and NG won't feel as much (obv) but again, supply chains if already exists are going to be disrupted

Sanctions would bring struggles to Lockheed Martin's production line of F-35s and Patriot missiles due to embargo of raw materials and rare earth metals supplied from China. Even if Lockheed Martin succeeds in finding alternate supply lines from countries/companies allied to the US, would they be able to get them at a bargain like they've been doing with China for decades now? I'll answer that for you - NO WAY JOSE. CCP sanctions would drive up costs of production and operation of the F-35, when Congress and the Department of Defense have been struggling for years to bring the costs down since the inception of the Joint Strike Fighter program. How then would you consider CCP sanctions ineffective?

The same logic applies to Raytheon with their need of Chinese raw materials to produce their engines, avionics, mechanical, and missile products. Boeing is already suffering massive loses from delayed deliveries due to COVID, alongside problems with the MAX (might I also add the Chinese Civil Aviation Authority was the first to ground the plane. While the FAA and EASA have re-certified the plane, China has yet to start the process despite Boeing's pleas). These sanctions would essentially see Boeing lose out on the largest commercial aviation market, especially when China has viable alternates in Airbus as well as COMAC.

With all due respect, how does all this appease the US???

You don't do it. The old trains will just block the bullet trains and kill the whole idea of HSR. No countries who built HSR do that, poor or rich.

Japan, South Korea, European (France, Germany and Spain) and Canada (Bombadier) all use standard gauge as China does. These are the only countries that make HSR rolling stock or related systems.

I have thought of all the possible explanations including the two before I made the first post on the subject. :)
If you want to connect China to Europe and there’s a lot of non HSR tracks in between, you won’t get HSR all the way through the route but you can at least connect the routes with this tech ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

You guys are all conflating hurting another with helping yourself. Wanton retaliation can backfire easily by inhibiting your own development capabilities even as you inflict real pain back. The US’s tech restrictions against China are arguably already showing signs of backfiring. It’s usually not a good idea to imitate the actions of fools...

When you are in a relationship where the other party is abusing you the best path is to walk away and focus on helping yourself. Only those without power try to retaliate, because the point of retaliation is to try to get enough leverage to demand better treatment. Retaliation is something that only desperate people do because they don’t have the power to just leave, or shrug off the attack.

Im not trying to debate with anyone.
Wanton retaliation can sure backfire. And I'm against such knee-jerk reactions. But in this case, with regarding to this particular industry - Defence and Aerospace - I think China can and should retaliate.

1. Not all commercial relationships are perfectly transactional. Esp when discussing high value added goods like Aerospace, there is a limit to what China can learn /adopt from Boeing. Boeing won't accommodate China to a level that would help China grow its own rival. I think China has got nothing to learn anymore from its relationship with Boeing.

2. China's defence industry's growth is independent of its accommodating good relation with US defence industry. I see no sense in supporting LM or NG.

So, why not use these sanctions? It is much better than sanctioning Japanese Automobiles or Korean pop stars.

Retaliation would accomplish, what, exactly? Respect? Fear? Is the goal some kind of emotional or symbolic posture or material and practical outcomes? Define the objective before you prescribe the action. Automatic tit for tat is a really thoughtless way to think about political relationships.

The sanctions from the PRC against the American defense firms, where they should restrict the sales and export of rare earths to them, is a very good strategic move.

President's Trump trade war and tech war against China, basically has failure. It brought no advantage of any sort to the United States.

China has gotten stronger. With the pandemic, China has gotten even more stronger.

This new attack from China onto the United States defence firms, keeps the dynamic of the trade war and tech war going. And one side is losing the trade war and tech war.

By escalating now, this keeps both countries firmly on this path.

The only way this will end now is for the United States to relent, or they do a first strike.

Not even a war, a real war will stop the Chinese from this strategy, only when the Americans relent that they CCP will stop.
