You would think the Philippines would have better ways to waste money than replace perfectly functional equipment.
Perhaps some African country can purchase it for a dime.
Hi gelgoog,

Correct with a capital C, Its majority own by a Singaporean company, with very poor service due to lack of major investment. Now they are planning to play with BIG BOYS, give me a break. Their only investment are in the major Cities across the archipelago, they dont have the social responsibility to connect all the small cities as specified in their franchised. they are a profit driven company ,a RENT SEEKER ,typical of an oligarch company.

Does someone have a source article on that? This would be strange since Duterte also said he was preferring the chinese vaccine, and for all intents and purposes china will likely just be giving them the vaccine for very low/free prices.
Hi j17wang,

The 2 major telecom provider (PLDT and GLOBE) are both own by Family oligarch. Of the two Globe had better performance and cheaper
price due to their preference for Chinese made telco equipment provider such as ZTE and Huawei. its very costly to build and operate a telco company especially an archipelago country like the Phillippine, so they invited foreign investor to partner with, PLDT goes with SALIM of indonnesia while Globe partner with a Singaporean company Singtel. Its ironic the profit they took out is 15 times more than the investment they put in, Salim group of company derive most of its profit from us instead of HK, thanks to its filipino CEO MANNY PANGILINAN.

There were two articles I think I read the other day about this.

One article clearly suggested it, but did not confirm it. The other article denied that they were even considering it.

Time will tell.

But, you know what I really remember from those articles?

One article said that the telecom company was cheap, that they overused their connecting equipment. One box had the optimal suggested capacity of 500 users. But that telecom company was doing business with 2000 users per box.

That was so funny!

So just like ansy1968 said, the customer was complaining about poor service.

But .... this is serious ....

Suppose in the future ... Huawei sells this telecom company the complete 5G standalone network, now ready to handle things like autonomous driving cars.

Suppose maximum capacity per base station is 500 vehicles. But this telecom company, goes cheap, connects 2000 vehicles to the base station, which probably overloads it.

Wondering if there will be autonomous driving cars accidents with this network set up?

Kind of interesting, because what will Hauwei do, would they be legally liable?

Would Rodrigo Duterte take care of it? I have faith in him. He will help China and Huawei out.

:D

The future of Philippines hinges on Chinese vaccine. Every country is trying to corner existing supplies and channels and there is the cost of the vaccine itself. Good luck trying to find vaccine in sufficient does in the hundreds of millions and at a low cost.

Hi Horse and TAM,

On Telecom, beggars cant be choosers, we are a third world country, any investment in any kind and any countries is always welcome.
WE the consumers desperate need a reprieve from our suffering from this manipulative company, They are the reason we are stuck in this hellhole in the first place, their inaction alone in this pandemic with the prevalence interruption is the major reason for the spike in covid 19 cases.

One article said that the telecom company was cheap, that they overused their connecting equipment. One box had the optimal suggested capacity of 500 users. But that telecom company was doing business with 2000 users per box.

Yup they underinvest and charge us premium for a lousy service,
the funny thing is they want us to be thankful cause they invest billions as in billions of peso just to provide us THE INTERNET to use. What a joke . LOL

What we need is to open up this sector for more competition, right now its a DUOPOLY, and they had regulatory capture the lead govt agency. The promise of a third telco player is being hampered by them and also by this pandemic. Led me give you an ex. INTERNET CHARGE for a 25 mbps per month is $50, both telco charge the same rate (price collusion). the expected price of the third player DITO TELECOM if ever they will able to operate this year is at $18 for 50mbps, right now they are going to use the media and their patron in Congress to stop DITO TELECOM to build tower inside military camp for security reason (CHINA TELECOM), their argument is flawed cause they themselve is majority own by foreign entity.

With or without the vaccine we can survive, the severity is center on major metropolis due to population density, but in the countryside it is well manage. And our survival rate is high, majority of infected people that had recovered are from the slums, I'm not a doctor but I'm always amaze how they are able to overcome infectious diseases.

As I mention before China providing and prioritizing the Phil in Covid 19 vaccine will help Duterte legacy and enhance China credibility immensely. All other possibility will be available for China if they know how to use it properly.

Oligarchy, or as it is better known as Crony Capitalism, is the worst form of economic system there is, and when you reach that level, its downhill from there. I heard that the Philippines is legendary for its bad mobile and internet service, matching say, Afghanistan.

I found that the survival rate of people in poor countries on covid to be high, and that includes places like Africa and India. I theorized that being exposed to all sorts of diseases in their environment may have granted some partial immunity, and people that are thin and not obese like Americans may also help, since fat has a tendency to absorb medication. This may also keep numbers down in all of Asia and China. Another factor is exposure to sunlight that can give free Vitamin D. I also theorize that wearing masks --- masks are not perfect --- may also allow a small load of the virus to infect people, but the amount is small that the victims overcome it, creating antibodies but might also become asymptomatic carriers. We might already have a large population of 'exposed' people with antibodies, asymptomatic, some or may not be carriers.

I do not advocate achieving herd immunity by letting the disease burn through the population as it is an inhuman way to achieve it. Without vaccination coming in time, the disease will likely burn through a portion of the population.

Hello? I know making vaccines and telecommunication stuff are connected to science and technological development, but isn't the topic drifting a bit too far? This is not the thread to rant about some country's bad internet or muse about the effects of whatever.

Note: Just a PSA. Mods, feel free to remove this if this is considered off-topic.

Hi Tam,

Oligarchy, or as it is better known as Crony Capitalism, is the worst form of economic system there is,

Welcome to my world, The most expensive (beside japan) and dismal service in asia, not only in telecom but all public utility sector like WATER, POWER and TRANSPORT (major highways and METRO TRAIN SYSTEM). See the connection why they prefer investing in public utilities, they get it for a pittance and dont have to invest more since the infrastructure are already there, A perfect term for a RENT SEEKER.

and when you reach that level, its downhill from there. I heard that the Philippines is legendary for its bad mobile and internet service, matching say, Afghanistan.

That is what happening to us, it inhibit our growth potential and our quality of life. The high cost of production force many company to retrench or otherwise close. That is the reason we elect Duterte, to level the playing field and destroy this menacing Oligarchy.

We maybe deviating from this wonderful thread, for this I apologize.
