Look at that title. How do they know SMIC is in shock? Still all a BBC spin. The Western media accuses China of being secretive all the time yet they always seem to know what's going on in China. One of them is a lie which means lying is not a problem. England is the birthplace of tabloid journalism where they will make up what people say and think. They even say when they ask SMIC for comment, they didn't get one so how would they know? Secret anonymous sources? How convenient. And you read the story and saw weakness. I very much doubt that this will happen. The CCP doesnt want its citizens to have dual nationality, it may create a lot of problems to them.

Because China wants to establish they followed the rules so when it does take action it can't be accused of being unreasonable.

US and China is way beyond cosmetic reasonable or unreasonable stage.
Its life and death struggle now.

Alot other Chinese companies got sanctioned but they didn't even bother to say anything because they know it's useless.

While most Chinese companies are too driven to make money, meaning that they will just import it. Surely it's not just because of culture, but you have to admit that Chinese people in general have no pride in their work and won't do anything unless there is a profit motive behind it....

It only took Huawei sanctions and a trade war to make Chinese people realize the importance of core tech....

Samsung family founder Lee took what was then a fledgling venture company under Samsung wing even against the opposition of Samsung board. He end up using his personal money to support the then venture company allowing it to grow because he has vision.

But SMIC languished for 10 years because they have to scrapped the bottom for living. Nobody give them support other than maybe local municipality

These criticisms are all too moralistic. If you can’t make money you can’t fund research and development. If you forgo money for research your research will starve too. You need to make more money first in order to capitalize your research so you can keep it going. This was the mistake the Soviets made. Japan and Germany focused on making money first too, and they further had the benefit of not having to do this against headwinds of globalized competition, or with nearly as large a technology gap. It’s not that the tech businesses in China don’t take the time and effort to absorb and study foreign tech, or have pride, or only care about money. If any of that were true the Chinese tech industry wouldn’t have gotten even this far. It’s that there’s a particular sequence and balance of contradicting factors you have to juggle, and it’s not a straightforward process. The anxiety fueled magical thinking and baleful laments in this thread isn’t useful or insightful.
