I don't think SK will go against China, nor will Russia, but time will tell,

"He added that China has not “won” the Tech War yet. “There is time,” he said. “China is still a net importer of technology and know-how. They can be [impeded if] denied access to capital, markets, and technology. But the issue of technology leakage from Europe needs to be addressed and the U.S. is on that path now. The Quad and Five Eyes are natural coalitions to advance this. The Five Eyes is now starting to discuss geo-technology and geo-economic issues with the Quad, the G10, the G7, and South Korea, and the European Union.”

I do not get the idea behind it seriously. When I see it from a global perspective, a 1.4b strong scientific power will only add more value to the technological progress for mankind. Why should she be "impeded"? Why should a part of this world go on and contain/stop the progress or development of another part of the world at cost of everyone?

So all the talk about each nation having their own rights to develop independently is mere talk? How is this world free when one will be contained after they progress pass a certain stage?

Hi machupicu,

You will be part of the coalition if you had something to offer, India as a strategic counterbalance (for me a major liability for the US), while the rest of the western world had the tech and wealth, as a whole they are able to harness its other strength, that's the goal, but The EU as a whole may be fracture into 2 zone The north lead by Germany and the South led by France and Italy. And here economics will play a major role, The US will not able to provide the financial strength it used to have.

For all the talk of containment, free flow of trade is still the main priority of each country, Thru ancient times trade with the East is what drove the European to explore the world. The American can use its persuasion to a certain degree but not all. And also the world is big enough for both of them to live with, the developing world is where the growth is and here is where China main effort lies. The strength of China is the perfect complement for them.

So in conclusion, China need to open up more, make it more welcoming for foreigners, we should learn from history, the exchange of ideas and foreign trade contribute to the rise of the Tang dynasty, while the mistake of Qing and Ming dynasty in closing out China from the rest of the world led to its humiliation.

Hi ansy1968, India seems to overplay its cards. It should concentrate on its economy, and proceed peaceful solutions with China instead of being vengeful.

US keeps printing money which not only doesn't make sense, but imagine a family who is financially negative but literally has a printing machine and each week prints money to buy groceries at the mall next door, eventually the scheme breaks the family.

Eu is an interesting case, yes it will have North and South factions there.

Hi machupicu,

We may deviating from this fabulous thread and I apologize,

This new cold war, The US want to form a western type bloc of countries to contain China and maintain its dominance. It will be a technological, financial and economic war. Here's my opinion, China has a fighting chance they had invested a lot in new technology and had identify its problem, and also the west had a weaker hand , they are financially exhausted from the 2008 and now 2020 crisis. China had been given at least 4-5 years of breathing space, hopefully the CCP can able to use that time to catch up.

No one seems to have reported that Trump has now banned CSG or China Shipping Group, which is the merger of CSSC and CSIC, but who cares I can't imagine what kind of US technology large Chinese commercial ships would still have. This is mainly a symbolic and toothless sanction.

Everyone here (hopefully) agrees with you but that does not change the fact that the U.S. is determined to create a coalition of the Five Eyes, the EU, Japan, SK, India & more to impede China and deny it access to technology and capital.

China cannot expect ANY mercy from the world. That is just how it is.

That is why I keep saying China needs to massively increase investment in basic and applied research, cultivate an open culture where independent thinking is welcomed, welcome diversity of highly skilled workers from other countries, and work with other countries (such as Pakistan) where it can to cultivate network effects of scientific collaboration.

The thing is that persons in the West of the attitude of the author are also trying to prevent China from domestically making technological breakthroughs, and even advancements to improve and at least catch up where behind, with their insistence that China cease implementing state guided industrial policy and domestic tech applied R & D.
