Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science have just revised "catalog of technologies restricted or forbidden for export" which covers TikTok (article 18 AI and article 22 Big data analysis).

Finally something positive comes. Looking at the timing it seems almost like design to stop any sell when other means have failed.

I was very disappointed of ByteDance when I heard that they were in negotiation for sell of TikTok. They should have never do that. Their current operation in U.S. are by local employees, following American laws. For Trump administration to ban TikTok on the false claim is violating not only TikTok's right but also American law, forcing TikTok to sell is a robbery in broad day light. ByteDance should have chosen leaving US market without any sell.

As a capitalist, selling business for some money is a way to reduce loss, but very often standing up against the robber is more important. People should grow a spine and say NO.

The United States does not have a monopoly in any of the ten stages of chip production, although Applied Materials, LAM Research and other American firms are market leaders in several areas. Tokyo Electron offers equipment for six of the ten stages.

This is the most notable paragraph of the Asian Times article...
If Trump is re-elected and keeps doing it, we will see who is going to be excluded in the world supply chain of major industries.

I understand where you're coming from, and wouldn't disagree with you in spirit. But ByteDance is backed by a group of privater investors for the most part, a lot of them international, particularly American ones. From some of the leaks, it appears Zhang Yiming is under tremendous pressure to sell at least TikTok US, if not the entire TikTok to the US companies/investors.

I guess it's hard for ByteDance to walk away from TikToc US and just launch a lawsuit against the Trump administration, when there are at least some significant offers on the table.

didn't US block China purchase of many tech company due to national security issue? So if TikToc have some unique tech that China dont want their competitor get its hand on, then by all means ban ByteDance from selling its TikToc, but if the TikToc dont have very unique and hard to developed tech than i think its fine to sell the US operation if the deal is good.

Maybe they can sell the “shell” of TikTok like the user interface and name without the underlying algorithm. Microsoft can substitute their own algo. TikTok is an established name in the U.S. and even if Microsoft’s algo is not up to par, it may not matter in the short term.

I does not matter... They have got to try... They can certainly improve themselves much more than the current level at which they are... I believe that even the most China hating Indian nationalist realizes that they themselves could in future be the targets of a Western embargo or that of any country that possess sophisticated IC chip, chip equipment, and semiconductor materials manufacturing technology for whatever reason.

change "Western embargo" to "US embargo" ;)

Zhang Yiming is anti-CCP according to his past posts. So. its better that he gets some losses for his anti-China thinking. He should have never compromised on Tiktok by installing an American CEO for example. All of these decisions were a sign of weakness that gave US the arrogance to try force a sale. China should explicitly block the sale and dictate that it will block any kind of forced sale on principle. This is not a matter of profit and loss. It should be a matter of national pride. US will never allow an American company to sell its business in China on gunpoint. China should not allow it either.

Its time CCP shows some backbone. Its obvious that pro-western liberals are still a significant force within CCP and China in general. That's why China still takes such a passive stance against Trump's gangster tactics. This Cold war should be filter that forces a change in the Chinese mindset about western worship. They need to start loving their own culture and forge a unique path. Only then they can become a Superpower. Copying the west will never lead to a Chinese Superpower.

China took the correct steps. Chinese ppl had been waiting to hear what China would do! Trump, Navarro etc think China could be pushed around, but in reality: hundreds of US companies inside China - Tesla,GM,KFC etc - make $400 billions/year sales in China.

Regarding Huawei, for sure the gov knows the various options and solutions, so we shall see how things unfold in the coming months.

This Navarro guy is the clown who encouraged Trump to take malaria drug hydroxychloroquine for covid-19 eventhough there is no inidication that it is effective. Imagine an economic "advisor" giving medical recommendation.

They are moving rapidly towards Huawei smartphones, Chinese OS and app store, thereby cutting out the foreign middleman from app commission.
