Huawei is pretty much dead as a company. Even SCMP is sounding the death knell. The biggest problem is China's unwillingness to use state power to retaliate against US for Huawei. China obviously has its reasons about why it is not retaliating. Right now, China is too weak to fight US head-on. Or fight head-on without hurting itself more.
While in general, I would agree with the tone of your post, this part is greatly misguided. First of all, Huawei as a company is far more than just cellphones. It is much more about 5G technology (with much more easily replaced US IP than the semiconductor/lithography production line) than selling phones so even if it were to pause high end smartphone manufacturing, the company would still very much be alive and well as a telecom company.

Secondly, the SCMP is not pro-China, nor is it particularly well-researched. As a matter of fact, it is well-known to jump on things making premature conclusions for click-bait headlines.

Finally, the CCP indeed should have its reasons for avoiding direct retaliation and part of it is certainly that the longer this drags into the future, the more the power dynamic shifts to China, but the other part I think is likely because China has never been able to invigorate technological innovation and advancement in the lithography sector from its own policies as much as the current American hostilities have done. SMEE is coming out with a lithograph for 7nm chips next year! Multiple companies are getting into 7nm or other high end semiconductor manufacturing! The current push to advance what is sometimes described as the most difficult scientific field in the world is so fast and so beautiful right now that only this truly shows the power of Chinese innovation. Why would you want to "retaliate" to stop this trend? So China can buy American chips again to avoid short term pain and work? Eventually in the future, to overtake the US at everything, this obstacle would have to be revisited and overcome, so why not just finish it now that we've already got all the momentum and are halfway through it? Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake, and never interrupt yourself when you are steaming through progress.

I mentioned before, by the end of this, China should throw a party taunting Trump by thanking him as the Catalyst to China's Lithography/Semiconductor Dominance.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is considering new restrictions on exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and associated software tools, lasers, sensors, and other technology to prevent them from falling into the hands of U.S. adversaries like China.

The U.S. Commerce Department said in a posting on a government website on Wednesday it was seeking public input on how to define new technologies as it determines "whether there are specific foundational technologies that warrant more restrictive controls" in the export process.

Desperation. US never really developed basic technologies. That's why most raw & specialized chemicals comes from Japan. The other technologies can be bought with money. If not that, China should focus on Japan & South Korean engineers. Las time i have checked they are already doing that.

The "Dependency" on US is result of laziness, not so called US superiority.

That reflects what is wrong with America today.

In the 5G race to pick one example, America should be building out base stations for that network. The last ten years, what have they done?

5G is suppose to usher in another industrial revolution, and the network itself will spawn the IoT which will be another driver of growth.

American is obviously M.I.A. on 5G. Their only actions are to try to stop the world from spinning. Same strategy with the integrated circuit.

Good luck with that.

Its a bad idea to start a tech war against a country with more than 30 million engineers. Here is a excerpt from the article below about AI. The more bans the US puts on China the more China will be come independent.

Unintended consequences

Perhaps, one of the most important messages Ernst conveys is this:

Our research finds that US technology restrictions are forcing China to strengthen basic and applied AI research to catch up in core foundational technologies.

His team’s interviews in China indicate that “interactions between China’s three AI development trajectories may be beginning to change. Ironically, US technology export restrictions are thus forcing a reform of China’s technological investment and innovation policy, which may help China to correct one of the fundamental weaknesses of its innovation system in AI.”

For Trump this is actually a great strategy. China will not develop the entire semi conductor supply chain within a decade and despite all his bluster, he only has four more years of presidency max. By cutting China off the semi conductor supply will make him look strong for the short term, which is what he needs to nab the election win.

Why doesn't Trump do it now if it's nothing to the US. No need to taunt unless it's just a tactic to get China to submit to something Trump wants meaning Trump is too afraid to to pull the trigger just like how he threatens to slap tariffs on the rest of China's exports. He hasn't done it because the "rest of China's exports" are all the US corporations outsourcing their products to be made in China meaning they lose even more money. More tariffs aren't even mentioned anymore. Trump wants to end American top ticket items being sold to China... do it! Less profits... less money on R&D for future tech. Trump supporters act like the US has endless amounts of money. Then why do they bother to complain other countries are ripping off the US? It's like the Republicans want to portray coronavirus as a hoax yet they want to full-tilt punish China for it. Trump is fully capable of pulling the trigger if he's desperate because he actually hates any other CEO who makes more money than he does. Why do you think he hates Jeff Bezos or Goodyear? He's a scorched-earth kind of guy.

There are Chinese companies making dram and nand flash drives. They will be taking market share rapidly over the next couple of years. How do you actually buy them outside of China?
