I never understand the support for developing hydrogen-powered vehicles, just a stupid idea.

Hydrogen-powered cars, bikes, etc. don't make much sense. I think any advantage is going to be in aviation for things like jet planes.
Potentially supporting the ecosystem would lead to more money and effort being invested in research and accelerate the timeframe in which hydrogen-powered jet planes become economically feasible.

But those are high level directives and not subject to what these individual companies are doing. I'm also not entirely convinced hydrogen planes will be better than electric planes even in that future, given the market-size research advantage of the latter and the possibility of novel planeforms overcoming the speed advantage of a current potential hydrogen jet.

Why not use something like the fisher-tropsch process to manufacture hydrocarbon fuels? These fuels would be carbon neutral assuming the electricity comes from green energy and the carbon comes from atmospheric CO2. The advantage over hydrogen fuel is that existing fuel storage infrastructure and existing engine technology can be used without modification. The energy loss from making synthetic fuels should be no worse than manufacturing green hydrogen.

keep in mind that battery powered cars are further along than hydrogen powered cars. There is a lot of resources being spent on improving efficiency in every aspect of hydrogen fuel cell/transportation/electrolysis technology. It will get a lot more efficiency in the future. Maybe it will never reach battery, but we will find more efficient production methods.

There are probably certain high power/endurance commercial vehicles like long range trucks and coaches that either have to use hydrogen fuel cell or Plugin-hybrid in the future.
