I think the stifling atmosphere of "wokeness" on US campuses is driving many scientists away.
California is banning calculus because math is racist.

Meanwhile alt right mobs try to cancel professors and force them from their jobs.

I wonder could the pressure to enroll poorly prepared students on one hand, and rampant anti intellectualism on the other, possibly have an effect?

Also include rampant crime and poverty in US cities along with a crumbling infrastructure. I am sure that people don't like to be afraid that they could be robbed at any moment

One China-sponsored trip for a scientist to any Tier 3+ Chinese city and next day he will be packing his things to permanently move to China

I don't typically like to comment on US domestic politics (primarily because it's so boring), but I just can't help it here. I usually see the logic behind the woke stuff - even if the conclusions and implementation are ridiculous - but I have to admit that I'm completely baffled here. How in any deity's name is mathematics racist?

I don't like that it's full of European names like Cauchy, Gauss, Laplace, etc. but those were the bastards who developed and formulated this stuff. Shame on the Ming Dynasty that it didn't.

Edit: LOL, it wasn't even my European name thing:
This manual claims that teachers addressing students’ mistakes forthrightly is a form of white supremacy. It sets forth indicators of “white supremacy culture in the mathematics classroom,” including a focus on “getting the right answer,” teaching math in a “linear fashion,” requiring students to “show their work” and grading them on demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter. “The concept of mathematics being purely objective is unequivocally false,” the manual explains. “Upholding the idea that there are always right and wrong answers perpetuates ‘objectivity.’ ”
You know, I could buy that the woke thing started as a well-intentioned, inept attempt to do good, but I'm growing more convinced by the day that there's a malevolent intelligence behind it.

But hey, no one could ever accuse me of being a fan of America. I wish the woke crowd the best of luck and godspeed (if that's still an acceptable term).

I remember my graduate class in commutative algebra which of course began with the Chinese remainder theorem, and the (white) professor remarked on how curious it was that the theorem got called the Chinese remainder theorem even though we knew the name of the Chinese mathematician who first discovered it.

In retrospect we're lucky it's even called Chinese remainder theorem. Given how Chinese New Year became Lunar New Year even though it's the new year in the Chinese calendar which was invented by Chinese mathematicians and astronomers, it won't surprise me if Chinese remainder theorem suddenly becomes Asian remainder theorem in not so distant future.

Does anyone know if nuclear power plants like Hualong One are vulnerable to missile strikes?

Seems like China is planning a large increase in number of nuclear plants. A little worried it would give adversaries easy targets to cause disproportionate damage

here's a kamikaze strike (Ki-51) on a WW2 era ship with 1 inch (25.4 mm) side steel armor, HMS Sussex. The Ki-51 carries 1000 kg of fuel and 250 kg of munitions.

it leaves a nice plane sized indentation.

How does that compare to a containment building?
