China is testing a prototype version of the Type 99 Main Battle Tank (MBT) - designated Type 99A2 - which, it is understood, will soon enter production for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) with a possible in-service date of 2008/2009.
Details of Type 99A2 were released in a recent issue of 'Modern Weaponry', issued by the Chinese No 201 Institute of China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), which claims that this is a "Chinese Third-Generation MBT". No 201 Institute is said to be an intelligence organisation to gather information on foreign land warfare systems.
The Type 99A2 MBT has been enhanced in a number of key areas including the installation of explosive reactive armour (ERA) on the glacis, turret front and turret sides.
The baseline Type 99 MBT's chassis armour is constructed of steel, to which advanced passive armour has been added over the frontal arc. By adding ERA, the Type 99A2 MBT has a very high level of protection against anti-tank weapons fitted with a tandem HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead.

I think you can. That would require a larger turret ring, and consequently a wider longer tank. But that seems to be the case of the ZTZ-99. I would consider the tank using an autoloader of the T-72 principle, but the autoloader is not a direct copy of the T-72's but a heavy modification.

Won't matter that much. If the bustle gets hit, it goes kaboom also and the crew dies. The bustle is probably more vulnerable from the rear and being higher than the hull, is also more visible.
At least on M1, there is an armor bulkhead and blowout panels -- so when the ammuntion got hit, the blast hopefully will blow out the panels and force of the explosion directed outside.

As for the ZTZ-99 Autoloader, why would the PLA still use the old two piece ammo for the autoloader (assuming such an autoloader is capable of handling both two and one piece ammunition)
Cost reasons? To either get rid of old ZTZ-85 ammunition or the long rod KE is simply too expensive for ordinary exercises?

right now, both the russian and ukraine is offering up grade T-55,call T-55AGM (ukraine) and T-55M6 (russia)both tanks adapted T-72 engine and powerpack,125mm tank gun (Ukraine is offering both 120mm and 125mm tank gun) and bustle mounted automatic loading.
Type-96/98and 99 could follow similiar path .

there's little information about the type-99A2,except,the new version will carry more powerful 1500 hp engine,new electronic allowing tank to share infoormation and new active anti-atgm system (arena?).
