I agreed its all wild speculation. Due to terrain, tanks were never a decisive factor in any east Asian war, other than act as mobile pill boxes or artillery support. This will always be the sphere of infantry.
So why did China field a vast tank army, including mechanized troops. The PLA is probably more mechanized than any of its neighbors except the Russians.
North of China however, to the Gobi Desert and Inner Mongolia, are vast plains and deserts. During the Cold War they faced the tank hordes of the Soviet Union, at least no less than 17 divisions faced them off. Chinese tank development all the way to the ZTZ-99 were designed originally against this.
Historically the north has been the area for cavalry armies, hence conflict in northern China has been traditionally dominated by the need of mobility, range and firepower.
