BERLIN. May 18 (Interfax-AVN) - The Moscow-based Salyut Engineering Production Enterprise (MMPP Salyut) delivers AL-31F and AL-31FN aircraft engines to China ahead of the schedule.

"At the present time we fulfil two contracts on delivering AL-31F and AL-31FN aircraft engines to the Chinese Air Force. The deliveries are made in strict compliance with the timeframe, but we are ready to complete them ahead of the deadline. Everything is up to the customer," MMPP Salyut Director General Yury Yeliseyev told Interfax-Military News Agency at the ILA 2006 air show in Berlin on Thursday.

He pointed out that 60 of 100 AL-31FN engines had already been delivered. "The rest 40 engines are being manufactured and will be ready for shipment in June. However, everything will depend on the Chinese side, which needs certain time to accept each engine. According to our calculations, the acceptance tests are to be completed not later than July, which is earlier than envisioned by the contract signed by Rosoboronexport," Yeliseyev said.

According to him, there is another contract on delivering 180 aircraft engines, with 100 of them to be delivered by Salyut and 80 by the Ufa Engine-Building Industrial Association (UMPO).

"Salyut is to deliver 20 engines this year, and 80 engines next year. If necessary we are ready to fulfil half the contract this year, and the other half next year. However, once again everything is up to the customer," Yeliseyev said.

He said that the customer would start acceptance tests in late July, although, Salyut was ready to submit its engines for tests even now.

"Our short-term business plans focus on the Chinese markets. We have quite a few things to offer. At the present time we are testing the AL-31FM with a one-ton greater thrust and a two-fold greater service life. I am sure that the Chinese side will be interested in the engine," Eliseev said.

According to him, the cost of engine deliveries within two to four years amounts to $1.5-2 billion.

The AL-31FN is based on the AL-31F. It has been developed at the request of the Chinese Air Force. The engine is designed to be mounted on Chinese J-10 fighters.

China signed contracts on delivering AL-31F and AL-31FN engines with Rosoboronexport in 2005. The value of the contracts amounts to over $1 billion.

I think this article was actually posted already on the restricted section of interfax in March. The only question I have is which of these AL-31FN engines are built to the fm1 standard.

From the text i am getting that no current engines are fm standard. It is in testing. So, at best that potential future 180 engine batch might be the greater thrust engines but there's no saying that the engine might be ready even by then.

What i am interested is what's with 1 billion dollars in 2005 for engines?? Okay, so we have 100 FN engines for j-10, undisclosed but surely far smaller number of F engines for j-11s, perhaps some additional engines sent for overhauls (thats doubtful altogether) but all of that simply does not add up to one billion dollars. It was widely publicized that a new FN engine costs around 3 million and that the 100 FN deal was around 300 million.

So either:
A) engines are much pricier, perhaps more than 100% so, or
B) there is a vast order of some other engines for some other purposes/planes that has been hidden from us till now or
C) one billion dollars claim is a mistake of some sort and the actual worth is much less.

Part of the 1 billion goes to this.

Now what isn't mentioned in this article are engines that are not AL-31Fs.

Like an ongoing contract for at least 100 RD-93s for the FC-1.

There is also a contract for the engines on the IL-76.

None of this. J-10 is using a Chinese radar called the KLJ-3 aka PLA designation Type 1473.

Hmmm, so salyut makes rd-93s? i thought those were klimov engines. Or is UMPO the maker of rd-93s? Who makes il-76 engines? And how come engines (and spares) for il-76 arent already a part of the whole deal, coming with the aircraft?

Banned Idiot
From a peoples daily article i read, it said russia would supply 240 engines over the next five years. The ps-90a on the il-76 was included as one of them, but certainly not the only one.

china orders its engiens from Rosobornexport. In the case of the rd-93, they will be produced by Chernyshev plant in Moscow

China signed a seperate contract with salyut to service flankers, but i dont know if this is the case with the il-76.

I'll confirm that article appeared before. As I noted earlier in another thread, (inventory tally) I have heard this before. As far as I know, Al-31fm1 is not in production yet.
