this is interesting
BEIJING. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will sell an extra 50 AL-
31FN aircraft engines worth about $150 million to China.
"Rosoboronexport signed a contract to deliver another 50 AL-31FN
aircraft engines a week ago," director for foreign economic activity at
the Moscow-based Salyut enterprise Igor Mulishkin said at the Aviation
Expo China-2007 show in Beijing.
Mulishkin, however, refused to specify the value of the deal and
the delivery terms. Experts evaluate the deal at about $150 million. The
engines will be installed on Chinese J-10 Super-10 fighters.
This is the third contract with China for the sale of AL-31FN
turbofans, Milushkin said. "As of today, we have delivered 154 engines
of this type to China," he said.
The overall amount of engines China has bought from Russia exceeds
1,000, he said.
Fifty-four and 100 engines of the type were delivered to China
under the first and the second contract, respectively. China plans to
buy up to 150 such engines for about $900 million.
The issue of direct deliveries is not being discussed today.
However, the licensed production of AL-31FN engines in China could be
discussed in the future.
The AL-31FN turbofan has a maximum thrust of 12,500 kilograms.
Specific fuel consumption is 0.685 kg/kgf.h. The turbofan's dry weight
is 1570 kilograms.
looks like confirmation of the deal signed recently regarding shenyang liming doing licensed production of the FM1 series for J-10.

Should we read into more that it mentions "J-10 Super-10 fighters?"

Also aren't these engines TVC? If so, is there a reason why we haven't seen any pics of a J-10 with TVC yet?

What happened to China's homegrown WS-10A? They keep on smoking that AL-31FN stuff and they shall never improve.

It would seem that Al31FN was never the TVC variant. Its nomenclature merely represents a further modified version of al31, custom made for fitting into j10. It is likely its still a very 'normal', non TVC engine. While there may be a tvc j10 in the future, and we know tvc nozzle tech was tested in china, that may be still some years away from today.

WS-10A is, to my knowledge, made for j11b. ws10 (without A) was an older, less powerful engine. A further modification of Ws10 will have to be made (probably its already being researched) so it can fit into j10. Still, with new contracts with russians and great deal of need for j11b line, its unlikely we will see any variant of ws10 in j10 for some years to come. At least not in regular, non test, aircraft.

what do you mean what happened to it? There are plenty of J-10s using it. They have always been equipping J-10s with both engines. We will see in the coming days, but it seems like this one might be for the first upgraded block of J-10s and is using TVC (according to the Chinese article on this)

Methinks these two posts are directly contradictory:

Is WS-10A currently being equipped on J-10 or not?

Will Al-31FN be TVC or not?

i was under the impression the WS-10A wasn't rated for single engine application. hence it use in production J11 and not J10.

looks like confirmation of the deal signed recently regarding shenyang liming doing licensed production of the FM1 series for J-10.
it mention future discussion so i take it as they hasn't sign it yet?

Yes I agree, too many things are mashing. For example, earlier this year, Chinese officials announced the J-10 is going to be fitted with an indigenous engine (obviously WS-10A) en mass and as standard by the end of this year. Now certainly they would have known about the J-11A, and if all WS-10A production had been earmarked for the latter, then the officials wouldn't have made such a statement.

Now, remember, we can't take the statement of what the article says word for word as true. It says these Al-31FN's are going to Super-10's. Thats one obvious mistake, and we can't exclude the fact that there may be more. IMO, the engines China bought were not the FN as labelled but the FM1 or some other more advanced variant.
