Now, CnEVPost has caught onto news of BYD entering Germany/Sweden
An article about whether or not Chinese EV makers can do well in Japan
I think the important part is the chart showing NEV penetration around the world. Japan is so low, just above India. Even amongst its existing sales, it is all with Japanese automakers and mostly not even plugin. So, there really is very little competition for BYD at the moment. If the Japanese gov't is investing in charging infrastructure, there is upside there. Still going to be tough in a country where people are simply not buying foreign cars.
Local Chinese look at BYD entering Japan. It's quite interesting that so many people still doubt BYD in China. Quite self defeating. Seems like there are some complimentary clips from Japanese auto fans at BYD products. Also, Tesla sales in Japan is increasing, so the EV market may be finally picking up there. Not sure there will be a better time for BYD to enter Japan than now.
This part is important too
Infineon is still the leading player here, but Chinese ones are increasing their market share. I think BYD has always been at around 15 to 20% mark, but StarPower semiconductor and CRRC appears to have been gaining. Keep in mind that BYD itself has been having trouble making enough chips to keep up with its auto production and bought chips from StarPower Semiconductor, Times Electric and China Resources Microelectronics and Hangzhou Silan. They are at least getting close to 50% domestic market share here. Could go a lot higher as BYD shares go up, since BYD seems to only buy domestic chips.
