Spanish pork is already on the chopping table, it won't go away without EU changes course. Spain's abstaintion doesn't help it because of their initial support of the tariff. I wouldn't mind to add Denmark on the table as it is the one voted for.
Make sure to replace those pork supply from Russia. It will make them hurts a lot as they need to fund Ukraine harder which will worsen deindustrialization.

the vote is meaningless. Germany alone had the necessary Influence to overturn the vote if it wanted. That it didn't, it means that Germany and the "absentees" all agree with the tariffs as well.

So time to pick a few of countries and deal a severe blow to them. Don't spread the pain around the entire EU, instead focus on a few of them and deal them a big blow.

Exactly. EU as a whole will be putting tariffs on China's EV so China shouldn't let any of those country off the hook no matter if they voted for, against or abstained. Also, China needs to surgically target vulnerable companies/sector/products from any EU countries not just to hurt them temporarily but to cripple or destroy them in a long term.

EU will only learn when you hit them back and hurt them.

Edit: Also, EU's tariff is 5 years, then China retaliatory tariff should be longer than that, maybe a decade should be sufficient.

It’s pretty much a good cop bad cop routine. Germany wants to have its cake (bar competition from Chinese EV) and eat it too (no trade retaliation from China).

Its a 5 year old saying its his friend made him do it routine, which is the complexity level of EU ruling class.

Europe basically choose to do their bucket list instead of going on chemo, and this is better for China in the long run

If last few years taught us some, that is to not overestimate Germany in European politics.

Interesting piece in 玉渊谭天 today, talking about the tariff/investment dynamic. Boils down to avoiding investment in countries who supported the tariffs, so as to not encourage the idea that tariffs are an effective tool. For example, Italy voted in favor but was also negotiating with Dongfeng for manufacturing. Countries like Hungary are obviously more attractive for investment.

Unlike the US, EU does want Chinese investment, clean tech, etc, but seeks to get it on their own terms by creating leverage via trade restrictions. Vital to recognize and defeat their strategy.

I don't think this will prevent Dongfeng setting up factory in Italy, but the price just got higher. It's well know by this point that China wants Italy to allow Huawei into its telecom network in exchange for EV factory. We will see.

Hmm, Greece… 白眼儿狼 or miscalculation? It would be funny if Turkey ends up getting one or two Chinese auto factories. I personally would have loved to see Greece choosing the “right side”.
