New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

The Electric Viking: the CEO of VW just said the other day that Europe was under zero threat from China's automakers. But August turns out to be the best month for BYD, Nio, MG, and GWM in Germany ever so far.

BYD is confident to export 250,000 passenger vehicles this year and it will decide the location of its first factory in Europe before the end of this year. BYD probably will build quite a few factories overseas in the coming years except in the US.

CEOs of German automakers know what side of their bread is buttered on.

Infamous for being at the opposite side of the road....Germany, Japan and Italy and they thought they were finally at the right side ...until they joined their US master bandwagon which was doing a U turn...

Does anyone know how large the Japan + Korea CBU car export market is? If China manages to get even 30% of this market that's at least a couple more giant car plants.

I wonder when we'll see large dedicated export plants like the Hyundai one in Ulsan, with >1 million capacity and having their own port facilities for roro ships

Pie chart of Australian EV market by sales across the first eight months of 2023:

AusEVMarket.jpg

All Teslas sold in Australia come from the Shanghai factory, so at a production level China totally dominates the supply of EVs to Australia at 84% of the total. I'm surprised to learn that Volvo is the #3 EV brand here, though one would expect that the impending arrival of MG4 will see MG move ahead of the more premium-focused Volvo. The only note of concern here from a China perspective is the poor performance of GWM, which offers the Good Cat here as simply the "Ora". GWM has done some advertising here, but everything I have seen and heard has been about the Jolion small ICE SUV, H6 medium ICE SUV, or the ICE "Ute" -- nothing about the Ora. Perhaps there are supply or dealership integration issues that mean they haven't wanted to advertise the Ora yet, but certainly I think they would sell more here if folks knew it existed.
