August 2023 sales in Australia:
MG: 5368 (6th, sales up 22% YTD)
GWM: 2878 (13th, sales up 72% YTD)
LDV: 1826 (16th, sales up 48% YTD)
BYD: 803 (23rd)
Chery: 760 (24th)
MG finished the month ahead of Mitsubishi for the fourth month in a row but continues to trail YTD. The MG ZS small SUV is the #3 best-selling vehicle in Australia across 2023 thus far, just ahead of Toyota RAV4 and Tesla Model Y. Alternatively, it is the best-selling vehicle in Australia that isn't a ute!
GWM recently launched its Tank 300 off-road SUV in Australia. It seems to have been
, though I think it will take time to translate into real sales success. August was a slow month for BYD while Chery seems to be building nicely, with sales increasing each month since launching in April.
To date, Toyota had been the big loser of 2023. However its corporate suits have long prophesied that H2 2023 would bring improved supply, and it seems August is when Big T struck back, with 22,321 sales for the month, roughly equal to those of #2 (Mazda), #3 (Ford), and #4 (Hyundai) put together.
