New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

For the people who know the market in China, why do people even want Teslas? I’ve driven them before and quite frankly its a bit of a gimmick to me.

Quality is variable due to shit QC. The actual car itself probably has the best range and handling, but the value proposition is crap. I’d rather wait for better prices or better made vehicles.

The new steering wheel is quite frankly weird. The lack of physical controls is a downside… I mean, it’s an interesting vehicle and I understand why many of my fellow middle class Americans are obsessed with it, but why would this fad have traction in China?

Y’all are spoiled for choice and Tesla still sells as well as it does?
I took a test drive with the Model Y here in Europe. The car is really a mixed bag.

Pros:
A lot of smart features
Long range
Supercharger network

Cons:
Hard to service
Too simple interior and IMO it was noisy. The lack of a dashboard behind the wheel is a weird design choice.
Meh looks and size

It is a nice car overall but I decided to wait a few more years until I migrate to NEVs.

You probably drove a made-in-America Tesla. I heard Teslas from Shanghai Giga have far better quality. Also as far as EVs go Tesla are still considered amongst the best of the bunch with no significant downsides (aside from unintended acceleration and control issues). On top of that Tesla is priced fairly competitively, especially compared to other foreign brands. And then you have the 思想钢印 of affinity for foreign brands which certain segments of Chinese population has together with Tesla's first mover advantage.
Yes, it's FACTUALLY TRUE that Teslas made in China are QUALITATIVELY BETTER MADE. Elon Musk himself said it publicly during his most recent visit in China last week. Anecdotally, even the people that work from Tesla U.S. are astonished how well organized, discipline the people that work in their Tesla gigafactory in China and we're not just talking about the production side of things here.

In fact Elon sent engineers from Shanghai to Cali and Texas to train the engineers there!

Yeah fair enough, but my issues go beyond that.

This is a very sparse and unintuitive interior. The infotainment is okay I guess. It works. But there are no buttons... no knobs. The stalks to control the drive mode, fucking weird. Tesla is doing too much to re-invent the wheel. I wanna drive a car that has an electric drivetrain. I'm not buying an iPhone. The less "learning" there is, the better.

But yeah, when I tried my buddy's model 3, I was pretty excited. It's pretty cool and novel, and I might even rent one out if I'm vacationing or something, but buying one? No way. I think @BoraTas covered some of the other cons pretty well.

But hell, maybe I'm just being a boomer.

You are being safe. No buttons means when u got to do something while driving you need to swipe through multiple screens. Having a button is click something once based on muscle memory of location. So while going through 5 screens to find the right button, already crashed into a tree or something. Major distracted driving risk.
