I think if it happens, it will be after a shakeout. But it will remain a laggard.
toyota and lexus are in trouble themselves in China. As Japanese cars are being displaced in China, about 4-5 million in sales per year will go to these Chinese EV makers. These Chinese EV makers will then takeover these smaller Japanese brands in Japan.
Gotion signed MOU for a huge 100GWh factory in Morocco. A little unexpected at this point for me at least. I was expecting this to happen in a couple of more years.

About the Prieto battery, one giveaway I can think of is why is no report of similar research from China. Ten years is a long time for the universities and companies to report updates.
Koreans are recognizing how much Chinese battery makers are taking over even in their home market. At least they still have America as a market
Irony of US market protection measures.
In regard to battery breakthroughs, since basically every university is doing Battery research at the moment, it's not enough just to have something that shows promise, if it's not a joint venture with private enterprise the research is just that, a piece of paper. You need buy in from companies/government amid a ocean of similar research, hence the usual sensationalized articles are written about every research to build hype, that's why nothing should be taken at face value until it's a product.
