How is the car Gordon? Curious for your opinion.
10/10 car

Keep in mind BYD is actually an American company and majority owned by Berkshire Hathaway. If Buffet didn't invest in BYD, it would have already collapsed (just like how China is going to collapse). This is because Chinese are incapable of innovation and must depend on American investors and ingenuity to build a successful company.

Chinese ride-hailing giant DiDi and Chinese car maker Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) agreed to set up a joint venture to mass produce self-driving EVs on May 10. This marks a milestone in the production and operation of L4 autonomous driving EVs, Pandaily reported.

Under the joint project named “AIDI”, DiDi’s autonomous driving unit and GAC’s subsidiary GAC AION will team up to make the vehicles. This joint venture will be the industry’s first in China between an automobile company and an autonomous driving company to push self-driving EVs’ mass production.

Zhang Bo, CTO of DiDi and CEO of DiDi Autonomous Driving, said, “Thanks to the launch of the joint AIDI project, DiDi Autonomous Driving has entered a new phase in mass production. DiDi Autonomous Driving has already made many breakthroughs in self-driving technology and commercialization.”

This announcement also represents the first time that DiDi Autonomous Driving and GAC AION have disclosed any updates regarding their cooperation since forming a strategic partnership in 2021.

The first generation of mass-produced robotaxi will utilize GAC AION’s latest high-end pure electric exclusive platform, and be equipped with DiDi Autonomous Driving’s technology solutions.

The two parties will collaborate to create an advanced L4 self-driving system that caters to passengers’ requirements and delivers a superior riding experience. The initial model is set to be launched in 2025 on DiDi’s shared mobility platform, as part of a comprehensive mixed dispatching system.

GAC AION is one of the earliest Chinese car companies to dig into autonomous driving, and launched a fully self-developed L4 Robotaxi in 2021. DiDi's autonomous driving unit is also one of the earliest Chinese companies to work on L4 autonomous driving. Currently, the team has over 900 staff and owns more than 200 autonomous driving vehicles in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities.

Several ride-hailing platforms, including Amap, T3 Go, SAIC Mobility, and ONTIME have introduced Robotaxi services, which rely on third-party Robotaxi fleets provided by autonomous driving companies like WeRide and Auto X. Baidu Apollo and Pony.ai have developed their own independent Robotaxi ride-hailing platforms. In contrast to these options, DiDi is one of the few ride-hailing platforms that intends to set up its own fleet of Robotaxis, Pandaily reported.

^I wonder how many of those were Teslas.
I think the Chinese content of made-in-China Tesla is 95%. They are bona fide Chinese cars.

Keep in mind BYD is actually an American company and majority owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
I doubt that's the case because BYD stocks are not sold on one of the US stock markets. I think Berkshire Hathaway owns less than 10% of BYD now. Wang Chuanfu is probably the biggest shareholder.

A new Volvo car design studio opened Wednesday in Shanghai, becoming one of the automakers' three global design centers.

in China

Tesla Inc. recalled virtually every car it’s sold in China due to a braking and acceleration defect that may increase crash and safety risks.

The automaker will deploy an over-the-air software fix to more than 1.1 million vehicles produced in Shanghai from January 2019 to April this year, plus some models imported into China, the State Administration for Market Regulation said Friday in a statement.

This is the second Tesla recall in China in recent months. In March, Tesla recalled 2,649 vehicles manufactured between October 2015 and August 2020 after China’s regulator said the hoods of certain imported Model S vehicles were at risk of opening while the vehicle was operating, increasing the risk of collisions.

MG4 is probably the best selling “Chinese” vehicle (name notwithstanding). Not being European, I am curious how this car has become relatively popular.

I think it is a combination of a number of factors:

Residual public familiarity with the formerly British vehicle brand gives MG a head-start in Europe (and Australia) compared to other Chinese automotive brands.

At least in Australia, Chinese manufacturers seemed to be less affected by COVID supply chain interruptions than most other brands. Many of the more popular vehicles here are still subject to 6-month delays and >12 months in the case of Toyota. One of the major consequences of COVID on the market here has been to accelerate the adoption of Chinese brands by several years.

MG4 is in the same segment as the quintessential European vehicle, the Volkswagen Golf. It also has conservative interior design that, while not exciting, is not going to turn some folks away like that of BYD Atto 3.

The BYD Atto 3 may be a better vehicle than the MG4, but in western markets at least the latter is likely a more compelling ownership proposition. It will take time for BYD and other Chinese brands to build the same level of brand familiarity and confidence.

To my surprise I actually saw a VinFast car driving in front of me today. The car turned off before I could see who was driving. I'm sure someone is being paid to drive it around. They were flying and paying YouTube influencers to go to Vietnam to talk up the car before anyone in the US could ever get one so I assume they're paying people to drive it around to make it look like people are buying the car.
