New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

The point of US sanctioning BYD is moot.
The U.S. has lost the ability to compete with China appropriately. They have no choice except resorting to the "knee capping" tactic. Case in point: Tesla cannot even find enough tech staff in the U.S. in a pinch anymore.

Tesla to send workers from Shanghai to California to help expand production, report says

Tesla will send about 200 people from its Shanghai plant to Fremont for assignments that will last at least three months, according to Bloomberg.

Supplying VinFast with batteries is going to allow a competitor to go against BYD.
I think Chinese companies should insert themselves into the global supply chain as much as possible, NEV companies are no exception.

Sodium batteries may become so cheap, they can potentially replace lead-acid batteries in ICE vehicles in the future.

If that report was true, that would have to be a serious case of technology transfer.

Just imagine TSMC send some technical staff to its Nanjing fab to bring it up to its Hsinchu standard.

There were reports on technology transfer or theft from US media at the time Tesla decided to set up its Shanghai factory.

Facts on the ground vs MSM FUD ......

having looked at this Electric Viking video, I started to think

Legacy auto are in trouble. They are in trouble because they are 5 years behind Chinese automakers right now in this EV/AV revolution. It's time to think about what VW did here. They thought so little of Argo AI's progress that they ended them and will now rely on CARIAD China's JV with Horizon Robotics for their AV future. They clearly have no faith in German or EU software companies. I don't see the partnership will Mobileye going anywhere since no one is using their SoC. Even BMW gave up on it.

So, what does Ford, GM, BMW, Toyota or VW do long term? I think they will in the long term either rely on Chinese automaker/tech company for their operation system/control/motor/smart driving or on Silicon Valley. Thus far, Chinese companies are quite far ahead of Silicon Valley in this aspect. So, I would be very shocked if the VW/CARIAD/Horizon Robotics JV type of cooperations don't appear across other legacy automakers.

The trouble's in America's auto industry has nothing to do with legacy technology. For years there have been scheme's in America to get people to buy cars that they cannot afford. They are the equivalent to sub prime loans for cars. Now that interest rates are rising those sweatheart arrangements are falling apart and people are now turning in their keys.

Similar things will happen in the mortgage and credit card markets.
