New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

supercat

Major
Relatively few Chinese live in independent houses like a lot of Americans do, yet almost 85% EV owners have their own charging pile.

CATL may start producing LMFP batteries within this year, which has 15-20% higher energy density than LFP, with about the same cost, because magnesium is relatively inexpensive. BYD and Gotion High-Tech are also developing LMFP, while "CATL, Sunwoda and Eve Energy's lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries have passed interim tests in the first half of this year and are now sending samples to automakers for testing, according to the report."

CATL said to mass produce lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries within this year

Actually there are loads of ladder frame real SUVs. Most are crossovers and now the new micro SUVs which are just hatchbacks with about 50mm more ground clearance.

Ladder frame has its weaknesses and drawbacks too. It is also actually not necessarily more expensive for the manufacturer. In fact oftentimes cheaper than monocoque.

Ladder frame has a tough ride. Better ride experience tend to be the driving force for using unitary bodies. There are also pickups with offroad capabiilty that are unitary such as the Hyundai Sante Fe pickup and the Honda Ridgeline. You also have the new Ford Maverick pickup which comes with a hybrid for base trim.

There are also ladder frame non SUVs. One classic example is the Toyota Innova.

Its a vehicle manufactured only in Asia, such as India, Vietnam, Philippines, and Malaysia. Despite the mini-van like appearance, it uses the same ladder frame platform as the Fortuner and Hi-Lux. The engine options are straight four diesels or straight four gasoline engines of the Toyota TR series. The TR series is a 2.0 and 2.7 liter DOHC 16V engine that is rear drive only, and is not very well known in the US as it appears only in the base trim Tacoma. The GD series of diesel engines are not something you see in the US either. Essentially the Innova is a passenger oriented RWD pickup. Transmission options are also old school---manual and automatic, none of that CVT.

Technically, the vehicle is classified as an MPV, which is a species alien to US shores. Unlike the concept of SUV and Crossover, whose distinctions are cloudy and indistinct. the MPV classification is very clear. It refers to a vehicle that has individually folding and removable seats. I can remove all the passenger seats and turn it into a van, or I can leave one only.

The idea of Crossover is very hazy. For example, a subcompact like the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 has higher ground clearance than many crossovers. This particular subcompact is targeting the markets of many tropical countries, where you have floods and such, and the vehicle could plow through some water. The Innova also cohabits the same market, and despite its not technically an SUV, it drives through similar conditions of floods and unpaved roads.

serious about this. I posted the source for this video earlier. This is not something that will happen by August. please add comments if you are going to post on this issue.

Anyways, From Bloomberg Japan on BYD's goal of hitting 30 to 40% market share in bus market by 2030, which will translate to about 4000 units

So I'm seeing this on Chinese social media also. Sales were up a lot in June when the incentives first kicked in, but July sales have declined. I still expect BYD to have a dramatic increase in production due to their backlogs.
My reading is that sales will be down in July compared to June for those automakers without backlogs.

On LMFP batteries, we will see what happens here. BYD have more patents and have researched LMFP for longer than CATL. It remains to be seen which type of batteries the automakers will choose.
