New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

That story is from 2020.

In any event, NIO is certainly the sexier EV company but BYD is quietly going to be a juggernaut. I'm convinced they will be like the Toyota of the EV era, making unspectacular value cars that will sell a ton, whereas NIO will be more like the Mercedes/BMW of the EV era.

I tend to look at the EV car industry more like the smartphone industry. Tesla is the new Apple, with incredible high stock valuations, a streamlined and simple product line, and a charismatic visionary CEO. BYD is the new Samsung, the Asian challenger that has the complete vertical integration and owns its production stack. Toyota, GM and other traditional car manufacturers are like Nokia, they have been very successful with their traditional products that it is very hard to see for them why anyone would not want something beyond these products.

Nio is trying to become another Apple, so is Rivian and Lucian. The other EV car manufacturers, like SAIC, Geely, Li Motors, and so on, are becoming like the Oppo, Vivo, and Motorola of the industry. Xpeng is like Xiaomi, catering not to the high end but to the middle aspiring class.

I'll ask the right question for my retirement fund: who's the new Qualcomm?

I am going to add to my previous take on Toyota and hybrids.

After 2020, Toyota has raised their battery warranty from 8 years to 10 years. For me that makes it much more attractive to recommend. There is also a possibility that the battery chemistry has improved over the years. For a hybrid, PHEV or EV, I would go for battery warranty first, the longer the better. Hyundai for example which also sells EVs and hybrids, have 8 years warranty on their hybrids but they do have a more comprehensive power train warranty than Toyota and their vehicles are as attractive as heck. But even if that is the case, I would still prefer a 2020 or later Toyota hybrid or PHEV because of the 10 year battery warranty, the possibility of improved chemistry, and to rely on the trusted Toyota mechanicals.

I am most likely to stick around using an ICE until there is availability of cars using LFP.
