I'm unable to find just exactly what technological innovation enabled the cost effective use of hydrogen. Otherwise hydrogen will always have an enormous energy per mass but low energy per volume.

Hydrogen usage in vehicles has higher energy cost than electric batteries. The higher the mileage, the higher the cost. And with further progress in the energy density of batteries, the relevance of hydrogen in new energy vehicles will become less.

Why not pressurize the hydrogen to overcome the low volumetric energy density?
it is already done that way (up to 80 bar), but the tanks get heavy and too high pressure means safety issues.

battery energy density is always going to be lower than combustion (or a thermodynamic equivalent such as a fuel cell). what I don't understand is why hydrogen for Beijing 2022, and not say, a methanol fuel cell.

Probably just flexing China's hydrogen technology progress.

There are rumours that Tesla is receiving competing bids from different regions in China for its 2nd Gigafactory in the country.

It's well known Tesla will almost definitely build a second one in China.

But I don't want that Amazon second HQ fiasco where states/provinces bend over backwards, competing with one another and giving ridiculous tax benefits to a corporate that don't bring in common prosperity

This is already happening in China (although its behind the scenes).

Local governments in China are competing with each other on which will draw more FDI. They provide subsidies, better regulation, low-rate loans, cheap land for factories, better policies on introducing foreign talent critical to operations etc

US states competing with each other is nothing in comparison to what is happening in China. Ofc there are some ground rules but aside from those, its a free for all
