She's definitely not ugly but I don't think she's really hot or cute either.
Well your standards must be pretty high! I think she's stunning.

She became famous in UK after starring in a sci-fi drama called "Humans" in which she played an android. I think this was quite widely exported and she came to Hollywood's notice.

I wouldn't call my standards high, it's just based on what most Cdramas and movies female leads are.

You do know that Awkwafina was a successful comedian long before she got into movies right? Awkwafina was a stage name meant to be funny and ridiculous. It's hilarious how you guys are hung up on the assumption that she is "ugly", there are a lot of ugly actors out there. Still better than the expressionless plastic surgery clones in a lot of cdramas and kdramas.

Never heard of her before until recently, but I’ll take your word for it since you’re clearly the #1 fan.

It's not a matter of being "hung up" on anything. Generally people don't consider her attractive. You are right, you don't need to be attractive to be a successful actor/actress, but it generally helps.

If you have heard some of the interviews of Asian actresses, then you have to know that many of them need to change their Asian names to American names in order even to get an interview. That's how difficult it is for Asian actors and actresses in the past.

So no, the so called diversity hire is nonsense. Many studios intentionally refused to hire good looking Asians so that they would outshine the lead actor and actresses. Asians are portrayed as nerd, ugly, and cowards in most dramas and movies. That's why you have so many ugly and nerdy Asian actors and actresses in the first because that is what the studios want. Please don't excuse racism and prejudice as some kinds of diversity hire.

For the last few years, Hollywood tried to recruit more normal Asian actors and actresses but old habit die hard. Shang Chi is just another movie on the long list of movie that stereotyped Asians. More importantly, given how MSM demonized anything China and Chinese, I think things would only get worse. I can't escape a day without MSM bombard me with negative Chinese news nowadays.

In a movie with a predominately Asian cast, there are no white people to outshine. However, what you said doesn't take away from my statement. Ugly and nerdy Asians fulfil a certain Hollywood desire and still meet their need for "diversity".

Of course things can get worse with the media, of course I'm sick of "asian nerds" too, but sometimes you just have to enjoy life, lol.

If this was such a concern, why wasn't Iron Man 3 banned? Which had a actual caricature of Fu Manchu.

Iron Man's original origin was also blowing up the Viet Cong, so there's that too.

Yes I've read Weibo and various online chats, and I'm not going to interpret some online comments as the opinion of China as a whole.

For the banning comment, yes that was my mistaken read. However, I still don't think yellow peril was really a thing in the movie. They in fact addressed it directly in the movie.

my wife thinks he's cute, so there. :)
If you don't trust weibo etc. Maybe you can try a poll in this forum? ;) I suspect that you won't get much different opinions from members (Chinese mainlanders) here than from Weibo.

In my opinion, Liu Simu is just an ordinary looking guy who would not have a chance if he was in China EXCEPT for minor roles or special roles.

About the banning, it is totally up to what Chinese in China think, there is no place for argument. "I don't like it, I ban it. I change my mind tomorrow, I let it in." Never argue with or try to prove the customer wrong, that is the only logic.

I would want to point out that there are many average, plain, fat, ugly looking A-list movie stars in China. However, many of them have some sorts of talents. The issue isn't about Simu Liu. The problem is Hollywood wants to stereotype Chinese by using Simu Liu for the role of Asian superhero and make Chinese to accept such stereotype as normal.

Shang Chi is a martial art and kung fu master and superhero. Basically, Shang Chi is incarnation of Bruce Lee. Just find someone who looks and acts like Bruce Lee.

Shang Chi and Simu Liu is just another weak and useless stereotyped Chinese that can't stand on his own and can't stand up for injustice.
Donnie Yen is a good Chinese actor but I don't think he would like the role. Donnie is known to be patriotic.
