Re: RED DAWN (2010) - Changed Enemy

I've heard of the Deer Hunter. My mom bought it (my parents "sweep" dvd stores in hk) and I knew it existed in one of the thousands of dvds inside the cabinet, but I've never watched it.
She told me it's very good(though she doesnt look like the type that watch that type of stuff), but I wasn't really interested in it especially with the name and the strange-looking cover.

But now you've said it, I guess I'll check it out during one of the more free weekends. thanks for the suggestion:)

They are both worth a watch, however they are at oppsite ends of the spectrum, the "Deer Hunter: is a slow moving drama while the "Apocalypse Now" is a sorta action movie, the only common underying theme is that they are both anti war.and won awards.

And the worst of all crimes ---- remaking movies, buying copyrights, and then completely destroying them by injecting what was mentioned above.

If you ever get time Watch the japanese movie :"The Seven Samurai" and watch the American remake in "The Magnificent seven" A different setting and expressed in a manner more familiar to Western Movie goers of the 60's but it makes a aaceptable attempt in following the original Japanese story

Mickey Rouke playing Genghis Khan? It cant be any worse than a film I saw Called "Tarus Bulba".Yul Brynner plays a Mongol chief who sends his son (Tony Curtis)off to some Eastern European country for a education and he falls in love with a European beauty, horrors to the clan folk back home and the conflict of interest.......

My main gripe is not so much portraying the Chinese as the main villains but instead of hiring Chinese they hire Korean to further instigate the stereotypes of Asians being the same and not even using Chinese but probably some Korean accented English disguised as Chinese (non-asians wont know the difference).

Yup, S.Koreans were hired for the film. The props were awful as well. THe standard weapons in the film for PLA was AK47!!!

No offense but that's why I have a 70% hating rate of Hollywood. I just can't stand all the bias, the stereotypes, and all those disgusting attitudes in the industry.
This is not limited but included: Negative Asian portrayals. White guys date Asian girls and steal them from Asian men, while Asian men don't get any girls.
Always as Triads or mobs
Finding American actors to play historical figures even if they don't fit the role.
Destroying stories.
Poor to minimal attempt to accurately portray other people's cultures.
Very strong theme of Americanism in some of the movies.

And the worst of all crimes ---- remaking movies, buying copyrights, and then completely destroying them by injecting what was mentioned above.

You guys should be familiar with Tong Leung, the guy who's Zhou Yu in Red Cliff. He's got perfect English and even small touch of British accent to it. He's almost a perfect actor. So they asked, why wasn't he in Hollywood. And it turned out he denied the offers when they tried to have him play as those corner store owners. Totally shows how Hollywood treats Asian talents if they aren't women.

The Departed - is a remake of the HK Infernal Affairs trilogy...

Director of The Departed, Martin Scorsese, doesnt even acknowledge the film 'is based on the HK film.'

And despite all these, talking about 'Intelluctual Property (IP) rights' often mostly debated by Amercians, even their film industries doesnt respect other's IP. Ironic isnt it?

Yes that's what I was referring to, along with Dragonball(though not a remix, but it's shit. Almost everyone is white, even the guy playing goku), as well as The Ring, Quarantine(off spanish Rec), and just about everything else you can came up with. They're even trying to get their hands on Battle Royale.

Yup. However since it's Hollywood, what can we expect right?

The good days of Hollywood when real good movies were made were pretty much over, asides from the occasional brilliant pieces that find its place in time here and there.

Oh and of course we can't forget the amount of idiots dominating the industries such as roland emmerich(his list of disaster movies which are pretty much insulting to anyone with education or common sense), or the numerous movies that's full of quality CGI, but none in the plot. (also referring to emmerich once again, since he happened to be an excellent example)

i missed the days of terminator 2, jurassic park, and forrest gump

well i guess i still have district 9(for carrying some fundamental messages about our society), and james cameron bringing us something brilliant once every 10 years lol

in the american remake you'll see that they not only killed the storyline, they also reserved a stereotype villian role for chinese gangsters and a weak PRC corrupt official, every stereotype from evil gangster, to weak nerd official, even saying the had automatic weapons to compensate for small dicks was in the script... yeah in the end it seem more a attempt to insult the films origins instead of honor it.

Re: RED DAWN (2010) - Changed Enemy

right now there is too much based on big blockbuster movies, or movies that set itself up for a trilogy or spin offs, as such the old style era of really good story lines are hard to come by and don't really stand up to the classics of decades gone by

I've seen Martin Scorsese give credit to Infernal Affairs. And usually the original company has been paid for the rights to remake. Just like in a rare role-reversal Zhang Yimou got the rights to remake a Chinese version of the Coen Brothers movie Blood Simple.
