I just came back from watching Godzilla. The monsters looked good and the way Godzilla killed them off was good. Way better than the Roland Emmerich Godzilla. I think people will enjoy it. Now for what bothered me. Godzilla just shows up. It's not like they didn't talk about him being out there and why but that's only what they did. Godzilla didn't have a good setup in my opinion. The other monsters had a good setup. The reason why they chose Gareth Edwards to direct is because he did a movie called Monsters. It was about a photo journalist covering the story of an alien monster contamination in Mexico when his boss orders him to find his daughter who's in the quarantine zone and get her out of there. I can see he may have attempted to do the same thing here with the character drama but since Godzilla is the star, that part is half-hearted.

The Following portions of this post are Spoilers, As such I have posted them in White.

Our first stop is the opening credits. This is about my only complaints for the movie. There was to much fore shadowing.
Then we open with our New Dr. Sarazawa. He's part of Project Monarch a secret project to study a forgotten era of pre history. Sarazawa and his assistant are being brought in to the Philippines where a mining company thought it struck uranium ore only to discover something else. That something burrows its way out.
Next stop Japan where we meet the Brody family. Dr. Joe Brody is a nuclear engineer at the nuclear plant his wife Samantha is also a nuclear specialist at the Plant and there son Ford Brody is still in school. Joe has been worried because of a "Earthquakes" making a B line for the plant from the Philippines. Earthquakes that strike the plant and send it Chernobyl. In the chaos Sam Brody is sealed in the ruptured core. This Drives Joe off the deep end.
Today.
Ford Brody is a Lt. In the USN specialized in EOD, and today he has come home. To his wife Ashley Olsen and son. His happy return from deployment.
But his happy reunion is dashed when Grandpa Brody needs to be bailed out of jail. Seem the old coot can't keep away from the contaminated zone.
Ford leaves for Tokyo to bail dad out... Wow talk about a reversed relationship.
Joe Brody reveals to his son that he might not be so fruity pebbles after all and that when the accident happened all this years ago he was on the verge of a breakthrough. His earthquake that day was not normal and worse something in the abandoned site is generating that Same signal.
So father and son bond by breaking into a radioactive quarantine zone...
There waiting is Dr. Sarazawa and a science mission working at the old nuclear plant.
As the Brody clan is busted again only this time taken not to jail but to the heart of the old plant they discover Sarazawa's science project. A organic object has encased the reactor core. Now as things start going wrong Joe Brody starts going right as his rantings and ravings are warning as it happens that everything is going wrong, and Muto (Massive Terrestrial object) 1 is hatched.
Sarazawa and his crew start taking losses until its just him his assistant and the Brody's who know what is up.
That's all the spoilers I am giving.
Cliches. Technically there military advisers did good. All the gear was accurately shown, the weapons were well handled. The Navy gets the best in show they have Sea Hawks, a full if fictional CVN the Uss Saratoga CVN88, Arleigh Burke DDGs and Independence class LCS as well as FA18s. Army gets honorable mention with Abrams Tanks Apache choppers and shooters. USMC takes third with Marines on deck and Hueys USAF C17 and a airmen or two mostly they fall outta the sky.
my complants.
The opening is way to foreshadowing with modified stock footage of nuclear tests in the 50s. Godzilla was as mace pointed out did not get a proper into, his existence is back door-ed yet there is no refrence to the 54 raid indicating that this is not the same cannon as those of the Japanese series.
Dr Sarazawa is actually Dr. Akane's Character from the original in terms of function.
And there were a few What the heck are they thinking moments. A Honolulu swat team opens fire on Godzilla with MP5s (we need bigger guns) from a crowded rooftop. A search for a open underground vault misses a huge opening on the outside in a repeated gag order where something ridiculously huge is in the open but missed although in earlier cases it was at night the Vault was broad daylight and a damaged DDG opens fire with its VLS randomly causing collateral damage.

After watching the movie I think the reason For G's Chubbiness becomes apparent. It's compression. Godzilla in the water is longer as he transitions form the prone swimming to thee standing the muscle and bone structure shifts. this makes him look chubby as he goes back into the water he stretches out streamlining

That isn't saying much. How does it compare to other monster movies, like, for example, Cloverfield?

I think it depends on what you like. I only saw Cloverfield once. I'll have to watch it again. Cloverfield was a more complete movie simply because it just followed the characters more than the monster. For Godzilla it looked good. The characters were just... there. If you liked Cloverfield, I suggest you go watch Gareth Edwards Monsters. I thought that was a better movie than Cloverfield.

On a side minor note, anyone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area would know the geographical mistakes the movie makes. They did errors like in the movie The Graduate. I know, it's because they were looking for scenic iconic shots so they didn't care if it was wrong. It's centered in SF. So if the evacuation center is at the Oakland Coliseum, you're not going to be crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to get there. They could've been going the very long route around the bay because one of the mutos was on a path that would've made going across the Bay Bridge, which is just SF to Oakland with just one bridge in between, dangerous but the thing was Oakland itself was in the path. So any direction would've been dangerous. They probably would've been better going to Candlestick Park.

Better then Clover in my opinion.

Thanks for the input!

On the subject of Transformers... I really don't want to donate the Michael Bay fund for brainless explosion fests, but I am sorely tempted to see this. Just too awesome to ignore.

I don't go to many films. Too many distractions in the theaters these days. Talkative teens, cell phones, rude people etc etc. If we do go we go on a weekday earliest showing. Wednesday I took my wife to see Captain America. We went to the 12:55 pm showing. We were the only two people in the theater.:) It was great!! I enjoyed the film. So did my wife.

Here in Texas I usually go to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. They have a strict no phone/chit-chatting policy. Your theatre is silent even if it is packed.

Here is a video of a complaint from one of the annoying brats who got kicked out of theatre. Enjoy. Keep in mind that some curse words are used, so not safe for work.

Tickets there are usually one or two dollars cheaper than what you get at standard theatres since they make a good chunk of their money from food/drinks offered during showtime. I don't get them as often now because they jacked up the price by quite a bit. 11 dollar burger and fries is way too much... Luckily they still offer free water, so you stay hydrated during showing. Only downside is that if the movie is really good (like Captain America Winter Soldier or American Hustle) you don't want to leave theatre during showtime. It isn't good for your bladders. :D
