Russia almost lost all its influence in Africa under his presidency. For russia can't even vote against the west to protect its own ally. He's been anti-west a lot longer than that. He was president when the Georgian war happened, Russia was far more aggressive then compared to the Ukraine crisis in 2014. Apparently it was Putin that stopped him from invading Tbilisi.
Ideologically he hasn't changed much. He's a free market capitalist and largely remains western liberal in political beliefs. He's just recognised that the western elites are force for evil rather than good, and being pro-western is tantamount to treason.
MOSCOW — Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin on Tuesday delivered his most passionate critique to date of the Western intervention in Libya, underlining a rare open disagreement between him and his protégé, President Dmitri A. Medvedev.
See what happened at the time? Putin was mad for Medvedev was selling Russia's ally to the west FOR FREE! If things keep going that way, nobody in Africa will ever try to be an ally of Russia within decades!Mr Medvedev said such comments could "lead to a clash of civilisations".
The UN resolution, which Russia abstained from voting on, authorised military action in Libya to protect civilians from pro-Gaddafi forces.
If not the west is stupid enough to make most - if not all - African countries decide to turn to the east, to Russia and China, Russia will suffer huge losses in diplomacy.
