No they are desperate. They played all remain cards at once. They did Iran protest but no follow up. They had insufficient prep in China but went ahead. All those build up was decades of work. Now they have nothing. This is checkmate.

If it was a CIA-staged attempt then it was an extremely pathetic display that can serve as yet another sign of the American decline and weakness - this pathetic 'revolution' failed, attempt in Kazakhstan failed, same for Iran, etc. That's only this year. US "allies" are getting louder and louder in complaining about the US policies - from the unfair subsidies under IRA to the American hysteria about the semiconductors. Their closest lapdog UK is in shambles - recession coupled with astronomical inflation, currency devaluation, and political instability. I can almost smell the fear and desperation of Anglos who are watching the sun finally setting down on their empire.

I don't think will be millions, doing the math with the high asymptomatic cases and the Shanghai experience, probably between 200K-400K. But still a is a very high number, so in opinion they should hold up, vaccinate and increase hospital capacity.
Either way looks like cases may be peaking so will be probably go down in the coming weeks.
But if they decide to loosen up then they should make COVID data an state secret to avoid unnecessary panic and give lengthy jail time to any whistleblower.
