Interestingly, leaked documents showed UK officials discussing the option to turn Diego Garcia into a permanent nature reserve so the Chagossians cannot ever return. Such strange behavior - "we'll vacate the islands but won't let you return" - sounds like they hid something there or left a unremovable stain.
This place is also suggested by many to be where prisoners of wars from the middleast and Afghanistan were housed illegally and tortured.

Chagos Islands are the ones most people are completely unaware about. It was TOTALLY ethnically cleansed by UK/US ~50 years ago. The entire population was displaced to Mauritius and left in abject poverty. All done to make room for a US base.
