One thing that drives me crazy about reporting in China is that reporters never ever comment on how China's huge population can screw with statistics, unless it can paint China is a bad light. And people are so fucking stupid to never question it. Like I don't think they quite understand that all things being equal, bigger numbers= more chances of things occurring. Like a tiny village of 100 people having a single murder a month is horrible, the village has to have something weird going on, like a serial killer or something. A megacity of 1 million people having a single murder every day is pretty normal. It's just a consequence of having more people. Even if China has the same exact living conditions and laws and government structure of Norway or Sweden, they will have still hundreds of times the amount of bad shit happening, because that's how numbers work. This is like basic concepts that even a 5 year old should be able to understand.
Even if China was a utopia, shit will still happen because crazy people exist. Even the commonly agreed upon "best and safest countries" in the world like Norway, Finland, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand etc etc, still have the random mass shooters, serial killesr, mass killers, crazy sadists etc etc. The difference is that China will naturally have hundreds to dozens the times of this people, even with the same conditions. And conditions in China are obliviously not at that level yet. Honestly, it's already insane that mass stabbings and mass murders happen as rare as they do in China, considering their population difference and income difference. Like even states like Norway, New Zealand, Sweden have mass shootings but China should have hundred of more times considering the population difference, a once in a decade event in other countries should be weekly events in China if all else was equal.
This applies to everything else as well of course. Building collapse even in America and Europe, but they will of course collapse more times in China because there's just more buildings in China, and China is pretty poor to began with. The issue is that large population or not, events like this still rise to the headlines and global attention and nobody ever comments on how China's large population can screw with statistics. They all report on China like it's some rich European nation with like 15 million people and treat it with the same standards.
