This is a Russian state media article however I think it explains well of the EU-China sanctions dynamics.

Basically the low ranking Xinjiang official sanctioned means that the EU doesn't have the appetite to go further in sanctioning. So the US took the deal and sanctioned these low officials.

Good analysis from RT on this one

Look at its contributor, Tom Fowdy :D who is a British writer and analyst of politics and international relations with a primary focus on East Asia. This author contributes article frequently at RT.

Right, sharp eyes by Fowdy... why the Five Eyes is now turning into Three Eyes? :) lol

I also felt perplexed when I noticed Australia and New Zealand were absent from the coordinated sanctions... oh dear, they still wanna sell stuffs to the Chinese :) and they are aware of their postures! Good article!

Oh, that retaliatory sanction really blew open the hornet's nest, I guess the EU was expecting the same China before the Alaska meeting.

Frankly I think it's for the better, EU got much too favourable terms in the CAI anyway.
I think it is a weird story.

The EU parliament will not even vote on this CAI ratification until next year.

Reading the reactions from Europe, that is a place totally run by white left.

From December 6 to 11, 2020, China and the EU held the 35th round of negotiations on the Comprehensive Agreement on Investments (“CAI”), a bilateral treaty that will replace the 26 existing bilateral investment treaties between 27 individual EU Member States and China, thus providing a uniform legal framework for

Some background information about the CAI.

This CAI is nothing new or a breakthrough. Just a progression for previous agreements.

If the CAI cannot be implemented, then China will try to improve those individual treaties with selective European states.

So I think, this will be a civil bureaucratic war in Europe, over China.

I feel that escalating the ban for Europe is a bad move. Essentially Biden is able to sabotage a trade agreement between China and Europe without making any economic concessions from the American side. China could’ve gone tit for tat instead of going all out with the sanctions.

But now that China has essentially solidified an alliance with Russia it might be too late for rapproachment with Europe anyway.
No, you got it backwards, CAI was a gift China gave the EU with the understanding that they will stay neutral in the US-China power struggle.

The EU shat all over that deal by co-ordinating and siding with the US on the patently and blatantly farce that is the totally made up Uighur ‘genocide’ and imposing sanctions on China.

Rather than rip up the deal, China is bitch-slapping the EU do their own pride and hubris would make them throw away this gift all by themselves.

This serves two goals. Firstly it means the EU doesn’t get any freebies from China. The second is a longer term and more uncertain play whereby in the future, when the EU comes back to China cap in hand, China can point back to this moment and the people responsible and pinpoint to the EU precisely when they screwed up and who they need to blame. Maybe one enough heads have been served up on silver platters China might forgive them. But for him the EU has burnt this bridge. If they don’t cancel the deal, China most assuredly will.

The problem is that the deal is held hostage by the EU Parliament. I have seen a lot of news regarding this Parliament and let me say that they are the most deluded people on planet Earth.

They are completely out of touch in Economics and Geopolitics. Plus they are influenced in a daily basis from the US media regarding China so they are already brainwashed.

China now is basically saying fix your own political shitshow and leave me outside of your crap..

China’s counter sanctions and very public dressing down of the EU is precisely calibrated to get the idiots in the European Parliament to spit out this choice piece of meat the EU has already taken a nice juicy bite out of.

Behind the scenes, you can bet a lot of very rich and powerful people who were set to do very well out of this deal are taking careful note of who they need to ‘thank’ for trashing it.

Europe is not China's "punching bag," European Parliament President David Sassoli told POLITICO on Tuesday, vowing retaliation against Beijing a day after it hit the EU with unexpectedly harsh sanctions.

But Sassoli declined to say whether that punishment might include spiking an EU-China investment pact, as some MEPs are urging

^^Here is your proof that the EU Parliament is full of delusional people

China "must not think that we are a punching bag," Sassoli said in an interview from the Parliament in Brussels. "Europe is not a punching bag. It is a great worldwide actor, a great market. We are an area of freedom ... and there is no intimidation we can accept."
^^Total clowns.. lets hope they will soon meet the other clown, Blinken, soon.

It's fine to punch China, but when China returns the hit then they cry like the little babies they are. Truly pathetic.

What makes more angry is that I know the only reason why the are reacting this way is because they fear their future careers are affected by China's sanctions. It's all selfish shit, European bureaucrats are all parasites. Most European governments are full of pathetic disgusting parasites, in fact.

I don't like this.

If America uses the EU as their plaything ... and Russia uses the EU as a punching bag ...

Then why cannot China use the EU as a punching bag?

Why not?

To deny China using the EU as a punching bag would be discrimination!

That is discrimination! Violation of human rights!

Not fair! Not fair!

 :D

Are these EU parliamentarians insane ? Something very fishy is happening here ! Not an ounce of self-reflection ? WTF !? Are these people literal sociopaths/psychopaths/maniacs ? This is a serious question.
