A long but good read on the Taiwan issue

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

There’s been a rising chorus of mainly western voices about the imminent prospects of ‘war over Taiwan’. This essay aims to set this recent hyperventilation against a wider historic context. It traverses history, geopolitics and what can be called the ‘spiritual war’ and how these dynamics intersect the question of the unresolved Chinese Civil War. The role of the United States is never far away, unsurprisingly. The essay is a bit longer than usual, but I hope the content is sufficiently rich to aid our understanding of the issues.

Any idea or possible sins committed by the ousted and disgraced Wei Fenghe?

Based on this guy's take that he's gleaned from the rumor mills in China, it seemed that Wei's son who's studying or studied in the U.S. smuggled the top secret documents pertaining to the Rocket force which was accordingly posted by one of America's top military think tank (CHINA AEROSPACE STUDIES INSTITUTE) that closely studies and monitor PLA military activities.

I have no idea personally and I have a feeling we may not find out for a while. The charges against him are very serious though so whatever it was that happened it must’ve been pretty bad.

That island is full of tragedy and deceit. Ethnic cleansing, torture, illegal activities. The Chagos People who were forcefully removed from Diego Garcia, to build a joint US-UK naval base in 1973, were silenced at UN, and after gaining some recognition of the crimes they faced, with a possibility to return, CIA and MI6 considered the idea of turning the islands into a nature reserve just to prevent reinhabitation by the Chagos. It becomes obvious at this time that both US and UK did something sinister that is permanently etched into the geography of this land.

This isn't a favour to Russia; this is just common sense. Why do the europeans believe other nations will continue investing in european debt if the europeans are just gonna pull an Anglo and steal it?
My understanding of economics is a bit weak on this subject but if one party is selling the debt then another is buying it, so what difference does it make to the European?

It's like a reverse debt trap where you hold enough of their debt (an asset) that they can rob you blind at any point. If you sell that debt to someone else, now you cannot be robbed so easily. That's a problem for the people who wanted to hold you in a position where they can rob you easily at any time.

I am not too good at this either, but this is my understanding:

if the debt is being offered and not bought it means that demand for debt is falling. If demand for debt falls, then interest rates rise OR debt cannot be further issued. That is why Russia in 2022 raised interest rates to like 20% for a while: it knew demand for Russian debt and currency would fall after sanctions, so they raise interest rates to make it less likely for people to sell off ruble denominated debt.

Interest rates rising long term causes lots of issues like carrying other debt costs higher too; not issuing further debt means collapse since almost all EU economies engage in deficit spending and MUST issue debt to continue.

So what they have to do is buy their own debt back. But if you issue debt and just buy it back, you cause inflation and for non-reserve currencies that can't force others to accept it (i.e. EUR), devaluation, since you are putting money into circulation with no assets backing it - the money created by interest on that debt.

You can find better rocket forces info on sites like SDF and CDF.

This was pretty big news in China and internationally within the military sphere back in 2023 and hints of it happening in late 2022 when some Russian big-wig informed higher ups in China of the treason.

This was followed by lots of purging in China's military, particularly the rocket forces. It probably isn't exaggeration to think that some serious forms of high treason was conducted by at least some of those purged.

Also the US won't be disclosing everything it has learned from their spy/cyber/hacking efforts against China. It's a two way street. Both sides perform routine attacks and espionage against the other. It's rare to show your hand though even if the document isn't that much more in depth than processed information collected online.

If there was ever an appropriate occasion for death penalty of an entire family, plus assassinations abroad of parties deeply involved with the grand treason (such as his son), compromising your country's strategic nuclear forces would be that occasion.

Family is innocent. That's too much and often doesn't discourage the behaviour in the first place so it makes zero sense to do such a thing. Chinese people unfortunately usually have very little loyalty to the country. You'll never find a Japanese doing this except when totally politically motivated back when they had socialists/communists who wanted to defect to NK. For Chinese, it's just about money and status. Give them those and many would sell their country out. A real shame. Americans are somewhere in between those two extremes.
