U.S. warns it will hold China accountable if Russia gains in Ukraine

The United States warned Tuesday that it will hold China responsible if Moscow makes gains in Ukraine, after Beijing renewed pledges of cooperation during a visit by Russia's top diplomat.

Kurt Campbell, the deputy secretary of state long associated with regearing U.S. policy toward Asia, said that for the United States, maintaining peace and stability in Europe is "our most important mission historically."

With Moscow renewing its Ukraine offensive amid a deadlock in the U.S. Congress on approving more weapons to Ukraine, Campbell warned that Russian territorial gains could "alter the balance of power in Europe in ways that are, frankly, unacceptable."

"We have told China directly, if this continues, it will have an impact on the U.S.-China relationship. We will not sit by and say everything is fine," Campbell said.

"We will see this not as just a Russian unique set of activities but a conjoined set of activities backed by China but also North Korea. This is antithetical to our interests," he told the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, an educational group.

Campbell was responding to a question about a visit Tuesday by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to China, where President Xi Jinping told him that Beijing was ready to strengthen coordination.

Campbell said that President Joe Biden's administration had warned Chinese officials in advance of intelligence indicating Russian President Vladimir Putin would order an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

"I'm not sure they completely believed us, or thought that maybe it would be a smaller thing, not an all-out move and push," Campbell said.

Campbell said China was alarmed to see Russia's early setbacks and worked to rebuild a "whole variety of capacities" for Moscow.

"Initially, that was a defensive endeavor. They did not want to see regime change," Campbell said.

But more than two years later, "Russia has almost completely retooled, and they now pose a significant threat going forward to Ukraine (and) to the surrounding region," Campbell said.

The United States has repeatedly threatened sanctions if China takes more substantial action to support Russia.

U.S. officials say that Russia has increasingly turned to arms from North Korea and Iran, both under heavy sanctions, to fuel its war in Ukraine.
"We have told China directly, if this continues, it will have an impact on the U.S.-China relationship. We will not sit by and say everything is fine," Campbell said.

Rev up those money printers and several extra 0’s on the national debt. Maybe those war drums to.

The US holding a state dinner for Japan celebrating a new defiance against China complaining China better stop helping Russia… Isn’t the West counting on Russian anger at being too dependent on China? They want European technology to help them advance in Ukraine not Chinese.

Biden's victory over inflation is turning out to be fake too. I remember how media and Biden took victory laps over huge govt budgets in 2022. I also remember "We defeated inflation" narrative of 5 months ago. Gaslighting is the norm.

Supercore gauge is interesting, which is even more stripped down than CPI. Excludes food, energy, rent, and shelter prices from the readings. The Ministry of Truth is going to have to work overtime in gaslighting.

Supercore accelerated to a 4.8% pace year over year in March, the highest in 11 months.
…last three months and annualize them, you’re looking at a supercore inflation rate of more than 8%, far from the Federal Reserve’s 2% goal.

This song and dance is getting old. If the USA bankrolls Ukraine to the trillions, what gives the USA the right to complain when China simply trades with Russia. Maybe the USA thinks a bit too much about itself as a protagonist of a western film that maybe they should by now recognize that we are living in a normal world where childish toddler logic just doesn’t work. I thought the nation is lead by the mature adults in the room as Biden has said many times before

I got pretty suspicious when I saw a bunch of high-interest banks in Q1 offering long-term CDs at close to the current Fund rate. Wouldn't make sense if they were expecting a rate cut midyear. This helps explain their moves; they probably got advance notice either directly or from other indicators that there wouldn't be a rate cut.

Seems that Koreans aren’t very happy with Minstrel Yoon. Being a US puppet it is no surprise that he disappoints and having an already weak leader with now with a divided government will only continue to bring misery.

IMO China should hope for a strong leader in Japan and S. Korea because only then can these countries hope to break from the yoke of US hegemony and realign with the new global order emerging with China in the forefront.
