Question is, how do you disabuse them of this notion?

A more academic or thorough answer to this question, would lie in those two articles posted just above this post.

Essentially, what is being discussed here is know as "Anchor Beliefs."

People just do not change their "Anchor Beliefs."

However, people still can be persuaded.

According to Social Judgement Theory, people may be persuaded away from an Anchor Belief, but that is done incrementally and very slowly.

Well, at least that is what I remember of this kind of stuff.

Now we see how interesting, and difficult, this particular problem is.

I dealt with people like these plenty of times. Believe it or not they can change, faster than you may think. Cognitive dissonance is the critical state of change, when internal inconsistency make people too uncomfortable to ignore. Either they will invent new self-deception, or they could cope. Cope is not exactly true to reality, but it shift them in the right direction. Do it couple of times and they will be pretty close.

Ex:

>J-20 shows up.
"It is fake"

>More images show up.
"It is a crappy plane"

>Video of J-20 doing cool manneuvers.
"Not bad, but it is an inferior copy of our tech"

>J-20 number ramps up, 2 seater shows up. No F-22 or F-35 2 seater.
"Not as good as ours, but we should take it seriously"

Notice they can still get closer to reality even though never quite get there. All you need to pull them in the right direction within their landscape of acceptance.

"J-20 is not a 5th generation fighter jet, as stated by the Air Marshal of the Indian Armed Forces"
- that guy, y'all know who it is
