HK was essential for the modernisation and opening up of China at the time, a gateway for both China and the West to do business behind the scene. Taking HK by force would not have helped China at that time at all.
Yep.

Consider some of the current negative circumstances and parts of HK to be the price it paid, in order to help China as a whole (HK has played a very important role in shaping current day China).

In fact, this applies to basically all of China and its provinces (the negatives/sacrifices that provinces and some cities have made can be quite different from each other, but overall, they were needed to shape current day China.).

As for fixing many of the problems, well, give it time (not to mention the central government is well aware of numerous problems, whether it be more specific to HK or other cities/provinces, but time is needed to tackle and handle them).

The time to fight "Chinese EVs" was a decade ago, but legacy manufacturers preferred to fiddle emission data rather than face a future which was clear even then. Incumbents cannot innovate when doing so means destroying their current (successful) business model, seems to be an iron law of business.

It mentions Tesla trying to develop a cheaper EV by 2025. Not sure how it's going to do it. Tesla's are pretty bare bones as is.

Anyway, this is another one of those "enlightened-but-actually-not", self soothing western articles.

Defense Minister Subianto leads in early, unofficial counts of Indonesia’s presidential race

There is a possibility Indonesia will be the next Philippine for China.
Time to get some popcorn...

Should be interesting how the relationship will change. The Indonesian people just had a couple of years of good economic relationship with China. This good relationship providing economic growth and Infrastructure. Only time will tell how this will develop might go the way like the Thai election went and deep state put things back on track if my memory serves me well.

Or maybe not. I hope not. He might steer Indonesia like his predecessor, recognizing China's rise as the future superpower. So he will not be as bad as before to the local Chinese.

US to deploy 5 aircraft carriers in western Pacific in show of strength to China

  • Unprecedented increase in naval power to the region is intended as a signal to Washington’s allies and rivals, especially Beijing, analysts said
  • Washington wants to reassure its partners that it remains committed to Indo-Pacific, despite conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East
The US is likely to deploy nearly half of its aircraft carriers in the western Pacific this year, in a signal of deterrence against the increasing military activity in the region by China and North Korea, analysts said.
Three US aircraft carriers are already operating in the western Pacific Ocean, with two more on the way. Their arrival will mark the first time that five of the 11-strong carrier contingent have operated in the region.
“It would seem that there a few reasons at stake: the first is clearly to send a strong signal to allied – of reassurance – and rival – of deterrence – powers alike in the Indo-Pacific,” Barton said.

“[It is also] to state that although US foreign policy is currently consumed by two strategic conflicts taking place outside Asia – Russian aggression in Ukraine, the situation in Gaza – the Indo-Pacific is still very much at the forefront of its strategic concerns.”
