South Korea environmental impact review clears way for US missile defence system

SEOUL, June 21 (Reuters) - A South Korean environmental impact assessment of a U.S. missile defence system found "insignificant" electromagnetic radiation relative to safety standards, the defence ministry said on Wednesday, clearing the way for its permanent deployment.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system installed in South Korea in 2017 generated a maximum level of electromagnetic radiation below 0.2% of the safety standards, the ministry said. China and some residents had complained about its placement in the southeastern air base of Seongju.

"The latest environmental impact assessment is a preceding step for the normalisation of the Seongju base," the ministry said in a statement.

It feels like China is tired of hitting back at barking dogs now, China hits back at the master instead. When is China going to put "defensive" military bases on Cuba? Preferably the ones with tactical nuclear weapons.

I found this interesting. Blinken's body language in Beijing:

Great find!

Some of the discussions is getting off onto tangents I don't want to delve into, but as for this even I have to say its time to cut it out. It was disgusting when Serpentza used to post all those videos of a part of China with a dirt road and went off in his annoying South African accent about how China as a whole is shittier than Nigeria, it'd be equally wrong to keep posting a single city bloc in LA, SF, and Philly, while beating our chests and going why the fuck does anyone still want to move to the USA even parts of Pakistan look nicer? Because as shitty as those places are, they don't paint the whole picture.

Your average immigrant engineer is more likely to congregate in a space like this for the record.

You see? That's what you call the other side of the story.

I think its equally nasty for you to claim that I think of these people as losers. Here is what I wrote, where did I say they were losers?
"They mostly fall in the bracket of being less savy and educated at a subpar university, laid off from their job, not being able to find a new oppurtunity, and thus not able to get their visa in order, so they have no choice." I said they were less savy, which some people in this world just are, there's no shame in it at least from my perspective. They follow a pretty standard route of getting a job as soon as they're handed their diploma and only speak the English level necessary to interview for and perform the basics of where they work, while savvier ones go beyond that's just a simple fact. "Educated at a subpar university," which is a fact not all overseas Chinese are funneling into Stanford and UCLA, plenty of state schools have a decent sized Mainland Chinese student body. If you thought me characterizing state schools as subpar universities is too harsh, fine I'll take it back. The rest of my post was just pure reality, so I don't know what offended you. Layoffs happened, some Chinese couldn't hack it out, so they had no choice but to go back. Now to me these people have already accomplished a lot more than many of my American peers for whom the farthest they've wandered from the neighborhood they were born in is to a city three hours away. If you think the kind of people I described are losers and thus its on me to think of them as losers as well, hey that's on you.

As for the rest of your post, okay cool. That's your experience and I won't knock you for it since I don't know what kind of life you've lived.
No, seriously, are you a foreign diaspora? I worked at Goldman Sachs and other investment banks in New York. Hell I even grew up there. What's the background behind your assertions? Enlighten us a little.

I want to know what's the experience behind your statements. No need to beat around the bush. I'm not saying your lying but you've given no qualifications or evidence for anyone to take what you said seriously.

True there may be some nicer neighborhood in CA or other parts of the US.

Nonetheless, One has to be constantly conscious to not make a wrong turn or wrong stop on your way there as it can be hazardous or sometimes fatal. Something that should not even be a second thought.

Lucky for me, I do not need to deal with this type of shit anymore.

Even Santa Monica Promenade which used to be safe has turned into a shithole.

That's where you're wrong. Kensington Avenue is probably the worst of the worst, but the majority of America is closer to it than a top 0.01% place like Palo Alto. IMO, America (and all other Five Eyes countries) look really ugly and depressing.

I'd much rather live in China or Singapore than any American city.

We have a problem because you are incorrectly assuming that the majority of folks would stay in the US because Goldman offered them a job, when there are a million other relevant variables. Stop generalizing and speak for yourself.

He is under the impression that forum members here haven't been to or seen the greater NYC, SF or LA areas before, hence he needed to post youtube walking tour footage to convince us that there are nice neighbourhoods in US.

Regardless I think we should drop this issue as it is off topic.

I've actually been to all those cities (not recently, but within the last 5 years).

Singapore and any Chinese tier 1 city blows all of them out of the water in terms of QoL, no contest. He's sharing the top 0.01% of America like it's something to be fawned over, when it's not even that impressive and should be the minimum standard every modern city satisfies. It's kind of embarrassing.

Well I don't know what exactly counts as on topic, since for a while now this thread has just been used by members to speak whatevers on their mind including that famous week long exchange between manqiangxiangyue and pmc. But sure, I don't want a repeat of that clusterfuck, so we'll just end it here.

I'll just say my recent point was sometimes being wrapped up in your own propaganda has its consequences. Conservative Americans loved to go on about how blue cities were failed cities and that everyone was moving to red states, and that they were going to become the next hubs of innovation. There was some grain of truth to what they were saying, only if the narrative was half as true as what they proclaimed ChatGPT would've been invented in Miami, FL or Memphis, TN. Except it wasn't, it was invented in San Francisco, CA.

Just keep things in perspective, is all I'm saying.

I'm sorry your takes are awful. For example, what do you even mean by stating that ChatGPT was invented in San Francisco, CA? I literally do not understand what you just stated. "Inventing" ChatGPT (whatever that means) isn't the same as inventing gunpowder. You know ChatGPT isn't just an implementation of some ML algorithm coded up by a couple of programmers in OpenAI HQ right.

I currently attend an "elite" university in the United States (Ivy League) and I got my undergraduate degree from another top 10 (U.S. News) university and my experience doesn't align with your statements. I don't know who you are and I don't know a thing about your background, so maybe your experience is completely different from mine, but the majority of Chinese students at both of the universities I attended plan to return home or have already returned home. One of my friends, who just graduated from the business school at my university (top 3 in the United States), accepted a job offer in Shanghai right after graduation. More than half of the Chinese STEM majors (minus computer science) I know have already returned home or are planning to.

I agree that jobs in the United States usually pay much more than their Chinese counterparts. That said, the cost of living in the parts of the United States where these jobs are located tend to be astronomically high (Bay Area, NYC). On top of that, most companies are getting rid of remote work, so earning a Bay Area salary while living in a low cost-of-living area isn't particularly viable anymore either. Money is not the only factor either. If that was the case, Europeans and Japanese people would be desperately trying to come here. That isn't the case. I'm not sure if you've seen this firsthand, but the dating pool is atrocious in these high cost-of-living areas, where most of the high-paying jobs are located. China has an infamous gender imbalance, but having lived in both the United States and China, I would argue that the situation is worse here in the states. Around 70% of American women are overweight or obese. No self-respecting man would date them. Chinese women are much more attractive in my opinion. That is another reason to return home. My point is that the issue is not quite as black-and-white as you are trying to portray it as.

I agree that the majority of Chinese-Americans stay in the United States, but that makes sense because they were born and raised here.
