New York is sinking – study

The weight of the Big Apple’s skyscrapers is slowly pushing the city into the sea, American researchers have found

New York City is subsiding by up to 2mm every year under the weight of its own buildings, a recently published study has claimed. The authors warned that this slow descent will be exacerbated by rising sea levels.

More than eight million people live in New York, and the city’s five boroughs are home to more than 1.08 million individual buildings, from single-family houses in Queens to the towering skyscrapers of Downtown Manhattan. In a

published in the Earth’s Future journal this month, researchers at the University of Rhode Island calculated that all of these structures combined weigh 1.68 trillion pounds, or 762 million metric tons.

All of this mass is causing the city to subside by between one and two millimeters per year, the researchers claimed. While some of New York’s largest buildings are anchored to the solid bedrock beneath Manhattan, others are built on loosely compacted soil and clay. Some buildings in the latter category are subsiding twice as fast as the former, the scientists explained.

While a subsidence rate of a millimeter per year may be imperceptible to those living in New York, the entire eastern seaboard of the US is subsiding much faster as glacial deposits put down during the last ice age continue to retract. According to earlier research cited by the latest study, this glacial retreat could cause the east coast – including New York – to subside by as much as 1,500mm by 2100.

Combined with a 220mm rise in sea levels recorded around the city since 1950, some of Lower Manhattan, which sits between 1,000mm and 2,000mm above sea level, could be underwater by the end of this century.

More frequent storms and hurricanes, which some scientists attribute to climate change, could also speed up the erosion of soil and damage to buildings, the study noted.

“It’s not something to panic about immediately but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding,” Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, told

on Friday. City authorities, he added, “have to get planning for this. If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilize buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Flooding also kills people, too, which is probably the greatest concern.”

Shanghai is in trouble as well. The Sino-Soviet friendship building has already sunken by a meter and half since construction. There are faults with the structure though.

Please, this is a major diplomatic occasion!

Is he keeping an eye on his tadpole vitality in order to create new family member?

Maybe I took it out of context. It was the Korean who stepped up to make up for his height disadvantage, and Trudeau responded with this action. That did lighten the mood a bit.

Still, I'm not used to this kind of diplomatic interaction.

Cops under fire for tasering 95-year-old (with dementia in a nursing home)

Australian police are facing public outrage after an officer tasered a 95-year-old woman in a treatment room at a nursing home, as she was “slowly” walking towards him using a walking frame with a serrated steak knife in her hand. She hit her head on the ground after the jolt and is now reportedly fighting for her life.
“It is fair to say [she walked] at a slow pace. She had a walking frame. But she had a knife.”

I remember when Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown was anti-China. That was back when he would visit the Dalai Lama a lot. I bet the Dalai Lama is for war with China because all he sees is Tibet will be free for him to rule if the US wins. The idea that the Dalai Lama is for peace is a Western concoction to give him sympathy and in turn make Westerners feel they're for peace by supporting him. That's why the West was shocked when he looked like a pedophile recently. It makes them look bad for defending him. The Tibetan Buddhist theocracy was know for gouging peoples' eyes out as a form of punishment. Or how about President Tsai of Taiwan just saying recently that people who hold the values of freedom should stick together. No I'm sorry to say but many Asians would look up to Hitler if he won WWII and Nazi Germany was the dominant power today. That's what sycophants do is they suck up to whoever has most power because they're looking out for themselves first. It has nothing to do with holding the same values.

When you want absolute power over everything like people in the West want, China just ignoring you will eat you alive. When you look at Tibet or the ban on TikTok or the West decoupling from China or any other complaint they have over China, they all have nothing to do with the specific complaints they bring up for each. The only way the West can trust China is for China to literally surrender all control to the West because that's really the only way they can trust the Chinese. How can ByteDance convince the West that it isn't giving free reign to the CCP to access Western users' data? There's no way unless they're in total control. How do you convince Westerners that Chinese aren't plotting to take over the world? The only way is to give the West total control over China and give them everything they want.

Do you think people with this kind of mindset would settle for compromise? They want 100% unconditional surrender. They want their values to survive forever by forcing everyone to embrace their values. There have been recent racist incidents where the usual suspects claim no racism or white supremacy was involved because the perpetrators doing it for white supremacy weren't white. Just look at Asians who delusionally think they're white. They aren't for white supremacy? During my activist years these inferiority-complex Asians would repeat the most racist things white people say thinking that if they hated who white people hated, that made them closer to whites and white would thus accept them. Today they can't do that because it's as ugly as it looks. Today these Asians just claim Asians are worse when whites commit any notably racist crime that gets media attention just to get the onus off of whites thinking whites will love them and accept them.

If they could decouple from China, they would've already done it. They changed it to de-risking because they had de-risk the language where China would see and return the gesture which would spell disaster for their economies because inflation is a killer. All the West is doing is bluffing. They hope China will blink first because if it doesn't, they're in for a world of hurt.

China being the world's factory, it already has relations to countries to get supplies. The West can only get supplies on the cheap and that only happened when the were no competitors. Today they have competitors and it's no coincidence they're vulnerable more than ever now because they have to act civilized to a world where they use to just take from them. The only way the West will change from how they think today is feeling the pain as a result of their actions.

Look at this crazy Singaporean Boba lib who was so racist she got cancelled and kicked out of college only a few months after she started attending. Now she's some dropout and a convenient leashed mouthpiece for the media.

That indoctrination, victim mentality, and lack of self-awareness is a little frightening.

Months after getting involved with my conservative student organization, what was intended to be an educational event of discourse on the numerous atrocities committed by the CCP was ultimately twisted into a supposed anti-Asian "hate" incident.
The president of my college released a statement the following day, calling it "anti-Asian bigotry and hate."

Soon after came hundreds of messages from the entire student body which carried on for the rest of my semester. People on social media called us "shady" and "disgustingly immature."
I experienced hate, combativeness, and negligence in those 3.5 months following my incident on campus, to a degree I had never experienced before.
Class dynamics took a drastic turn. I found myself self-censoring after numerous failed attempts at class participation. I felt either overlooked by professors and students or instantly recognized and targeted.
The anxiety and hostility increased as our school's newspaper continued to add fuel to the fire, releasing article after article about the incident on campus, which further made me a target.
My daily routine shifted to staying out of people's way, taking every meal I ate to-go, attending all classes online, and ultimately spending the rest of my semester in complete isolation in my dorm room.
I decided to leave campus after the incident with our anti-CCP event and move forward.

Saudi Arabia refuses to change stance on Ukraine conflict

The kingdom has said it will maintain a policy of “positive neutrality” towards the Ukraine conflict

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has said that Riyadh and other Arab states are taking an impartial stance in the Ukraine-Russia conflict and want to maintain ties with both parties. He made the statement after the conclusion of the Arab League summit in Jeddah on Friday, which was attended by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

“Since the beginning of the crisis, the Arab countries have taken a position of positive neutrality, opening dialogue with the Russian and Ukrainian parties, while ensuring Arab relations with the two sides,” the diplomat said, adding, “we welcome hearing the viewpoints of both sides of [the] Russia-Ukrainian conflict.”

The Ukrainian leader insisted, without singling anyone out, that some Arab nations have been turning a blind eye to Moscow’s “illegal annexations.”

Saudi Arabia has declined to take part in the Western sanctions on Moscow, which include efforts to curtail its energy exports. Riyadh’s continued cooperation with Russia through OPEC+, a cartel of oil exporters, has drawn criticism from the US.

Riyadh has expressed hope that it could broker a resolution to the conflict, pledging to maintain trade and diplomatic ties with both Russia and Ukraine.

After meeting with Zelensky earlier on Friday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke about “the kingdom’s readiness to continue mediating efforts between Russia and Ukraine.” He said he would “support all international efforts aimed at resolving the crisis politically in a way that contributes to achieving security.”

The Saudi foreign minister visited Kiev and Moscow for high-level talks in 2022, and later said that bin Salman was involved in negotiating a prisoner swap between the two sides last September, which he hailed as a “humanitarian breakthrough.”

'Level playing field' and 'market distortions'. They mean Chinese economic model 'distorts' the economy. They prefer PRC to wholesale adopt neoliberalism and to not make any industrial and technological five year plans and subsidize those plans to make them come to fruition. When you see those two words of 'level playing field' and 'market distortions' come out of the mouth of westoid that is what their meaning is. The 'free market' domestic and foreign tycoons will take care of all citizens and the future of the nation a la Hongkong: a city which wholesale implemented the neoliberal economic model and now has people living in coffin homes with zero technological vibrancy. They have been engaging in forcing their preferred economical model on countries around the globe since at least the 1980s through trade agreements and western dominated institutions like WTO, IMF and World Bank.
