The ruling party in South Africa has proposed to admit new countries to the BRICS in 2023
According to the News24 portal, the expansion of the group corresponds to the desire of the African National Congress party to strengthen alliances to counter the dominance of Western economies in the world, in particular the United States
The Republic of South Africa should use its chairmanship in the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) this year in order to gain admission to the organization of new countries. This is stated in the draft resolution of the congress of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party in South Africa, which completes its work on Friday.
"The ANC and the government of the country headed by it should support the expansion of the BRICS by accepting new members based on agreed criteria, principles and values," the local news portal News24 quotes the document, noting that it is about the task of expanding the BRICS during the presidency of South Africa, which should achieve consensus among the current BRICS participants for this. According to the portal, the expansion of the BRICS corresponds to the desire of the ruling party in South Africa to strengthen alliances to counter the dominance of Western economies in the world, in particular the United States.
South Africa took over the post of Chairman of the BRICS Group on January 1. It will last throughout this year. A diplomatic source in Pretoria told TASS that negotiations on a possible expansion of the BRICS will take place in the coming months. Algeria, Argentina and Iran have already applied to join the BRICS, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt have announced their interest in membership in this group.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov reported on September 26 that the BRICS countries had begun work on possible expansion of the association. However, earlier he pointed out that quick decisions on this matter should not be expected. As Ryabkov explained, the BRICS participants will have to reach "an understanding regarding the basic parameters of expansion," and this is a "difficult and delicate process." Therefore, large-scale consultations are coming within the association.
In 2006, Brazil, Russia, India and China created the BRIC Group. South Africa joined it in 2011, turning it into BRICS. South Africa is chairing the BRICS for the third time.
The ANC Congress, which convenes once every five years, began its work on December 16. Its first part ended four days later with the re-election as party leader of the incumbent President of South Africa Cyril Ramaposa. The second part of the congress opened on January 5 and should end this Friday with the adoption of the final resolution.
