I don't think foreign policy plays a major role in US elections, its an afterthought. Both sides seem to be happy to outsource that to the highest bidder, which is the neocons. It's more about immigration, race, gun rights and so on.Dude, I lived in America for a number of years and am assuming you're in America as well. I can't recall the last time "facts" have persuaded the American voters of "doing or voting for the right reasons" in like ever. Bush Jr. won because of Clinton blow job fatigue with an added helped from the Supreme Court that installed Bush Jr. He then proceeded to invade countries based on LIE but because Americans were acting so insecure after the 9/11 attack they blindly went along with Bush Jr's nonsensical rationale of "better fight them over there than to fight the terrorists in their country" as if the terrorists were going to commision a flight on Terrorists C-5/C-17 and parachute their way into America. That spiel never made any logical sense but the Americans with all their supposed wisdom bought it enough to even re-elect the War Criminal even after finding out their President lied to them!!
Trump was elected because enough Americans have seen their way of life drastically changed for the worst, and not for the better socio-economically. They have seen their lifestyle diminished and seen their jobs essentially shipped to China. Clinton was busy singing and ignoring that pertinent complaints from the average Americans an area that regardless of party affiliation resonated well. I remember when a Carrier plant somewhere in Indiana closed down and was announced by one of the Carrier executive, the workers gathered into the meeting erupted in anger and some immediately declared their intent to vote for Trump. When I saw that clip online I knew right then and there that Hillary was toast, and Trump was going to be the only candidate on the Republican party going to adroitly exploit that sentiment to his advantage.
Voters don't vote based on some super duper "logic" voting is just like any other decisions most human are engaged into doing and that's based on emotions. Logic isn't required, never was never will be. And as a very bright person yourself @Phead128 not to mention a person that's been exposed to Western political system ought to know this fact.
When was the last time a US election led to a major shift in foreign policy? Maybe Reagan.
