This is a blatant threat to China, but China never accepts or becomes frightened by such threats. China's international status is achieved by its own strength, rather than granted by the US. As treasury secretary, Yellen should know this better than anyone else.

Almost for sure yes, that is the common saying.
But it's not necessarily some geopolitical game, it is also market forces. This looks like a major scoop that brings a lot of traffic. Because traditional news is competing with non-traditional social media, etc. the fact-checking process is no longer important, only speed.

‘Unfriendly’ West delaying payments for Russian energy – Putin​

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that certain Western countries are failing to pay on time for the delivery of Russian energy.

“Banks from most ‘unfriendly’ countries are delaying the transfer of payments,” the head of state said.

According to Putin, despite the calls to reduce energy supplies, Western nations are admitting that they cannot do without Russian energy resources. They are thus “driving up prices and destabilizing the market,” he said, warning that Moscow will redirect its energy eastward.
