thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and other all sent ministers to China couple days ago. Aside from Singapore going other way, it’s pretty clear to anyone that NATO or Quad in ASEAN isn’t going to work.

If I try a little harder, ASEAN is actually playing this game fairly smooth and well. Indonesia is the anchor of ASEAN, and the host of G20 2022. When Indonesia expresses neutrality on the war, that basically means ASEAN is neutral.

Indonesia and Malaysia have long and good relationship with Russia, including military.

But ASEAN has so many ties to US at all levels. Singapore is a de facto US ally in the group. So its PM was in DC and played nice with US. I see that as a balancing act.

Overall as a whole, ASEAN is trying to stay neutral in the triangle of US, China and Russia, which is a smart move. In my view, ASEAN is the barometer of how isolated Russia actually is. If ASEAN as a whole does not break away with Russia, that means Russia is not isolated. This is because ASEAN is becoming the real center of gravity of the entire Indo-Pacific region.

>be me, who's been taught Chinese since grade school, and still can't pass HSK4
我太难了
Im halfway hsk 2, but that two month between hsk 1 and 2 made me forget like 40% of the hsk 1 words and grammar

I hope after hsk 3 a lot more content opens up for consumption. I can handle only so much peppa pig like level content as a late 20er.

Yes and as I mentioned previously, asean even Singapore been pretty consistent in their desire to not have the region destabilized and loathe to be in middle of a US and China conflict, their main aim is economy, development and trade which kinda fit nicely to China objective for the region. This is evidenced by the total failure of previous trips made by Pompeo, blinken, Kamala etc to asean trying to stir shit up.
Territorial issues such as SCS only flare up once awhile, with US fanning the flames but most countries involved would like to deal with it peacefully.

The picture of asean is the bigger picture of global south. Majority of globe south dun drink the kool-aid from US led western nations aka the so called International community sanctioning Russia. Although this so called international community claim to have moral authority, it represents the globe far less than the rest of the world. Just with India and China supporting Russia, two most populous nations in the world, they cannot say effectively that Russia is isolated. And when you add Brazil to form BRICS, ASEAN, Africa, much of the global south, it becomes more apparent. So essentially you have the whites, led by US, vassal states in Europe, canada, Australia, NZ the five eyes and white wannabes in Singapore, Japan and south Korea vs rest of the world.

In ASEAN, the true leader is Duterte, yup being a Filipino I was being bias BUT he among the ASEAN leaders are willing to speak out especially against his highness Obama, with that he gain a lot of respect in the region. Singapore lee hsien loong is a weak leader, talk like pimp and act like one, with Duterte leaving office this year, a credible and a true ASEANIST in the person of Widodo will be his replacement and ASEAN will be in good hand.

@4Runner Bro to tell you the truth ASEAN is playing both side and reaping the benefits, that's what national interest is all about. BUT what Singapore had done is go the the extreme, his father advise is being discard cause the son hadn't have the balls to resist, In mid 80's that distinction is us The Philippine the US little brother, once you allow the US in as a guest, it's very hard to ask them out even though they overstay their welcome.

To counter China in economic diplomacy the US employ Japan, BUT the Japanese pocket is not deep enough and their export equipment is Pricey! they were forced to renegotiate and out of pride was forced to price themselves out of the market/project, leaving a sour taste in the mouth for the Japanese meaning they're not special (they thought we're fools and automatically comply), ;) it brings a huge smile for the locals thus earning China some brownie points.

And for us in ASEAN, China had given us an alternative, a great bargaining power and freedom of movement which we don't have before thus Japan is aggrieved, that resentment is so deep that they are willing to commit Hara Kiri. And the same can be said of Singapore, Taiwan and the HKG cockroaches.
