Include ASEAN in the QUAD?

Sorry, but Indonesia, literally the "Big Bro" of ASEAN, repeatedly stressed that they would not join any military alliance with any other country as per Indonesia's constitution.

Count Thailand, Laos and Cambodia out, all of them are in China's team.

Malaysia, despite being part of the FPDA and have maritime disputes in the SCS, would like to stay out of the US-China confrontation bullpen. They also criticized AUKUS.

Myanmar can be counted out as well.

That's more than half of ASEAN gone.

thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and other all sent ministers to China couple days ago. Aside from Singapore going other way, it’s pretty clear to anyone that NATO or Quad in ASEAN isn’t going to work.

I think that was a long term policy goal of America. Try to turn quad into a NATO of asia with as many ASEAN members as possible. I don't know if any government official has said that publically before.

It was unlikely to happen before the Ukraine conflict and now seems even more unlikely. Suga is just upset that global attention has shifted away from China for now.
During the press conference by Chinese foreign ministry not long ago, they specifically appointed out nato in Asia isn't going to work. At first I thought China was just referring to Ukraine situation and warning US about this but it seems like the plan was already there long before.

I read from here or PDF that initially IK was pretty anti-China before his election, and then did a 180.

(also a lot about how its the military that is secretly running the country, and they want close/good ties with China due to various reasons. Although there is apparantly a pro-US army general??? ).

The biggest risk for Pakistan, IMO, is for someone from a conservative religious party to become the PM. That will create problems with her neighbors, not just China, but also India and Iran, who are Shite versus Suni for Pakistan. This is something China does not want in her neighborhood.

A pro US PM still has to face up to the economic reality of Pakistan, which is in terrible shape. US has no money to help her out other than sending Pakistan to IMF, which will impose harsh economic discipline to the country with any bail out money. Do not think the citizens and military of Pakistan will stand for that.

Can Pakistani members here share their thoughts with us ?

What "ways". Are you going to make another economic suicide?

if yes then they are welcome to try
Sigh...sign...sign... as Chinese like to say: "Anything important to say shall be repeated 3 times". Also as Chinese like to say: "洋大人只剩下嘴炮了"。

Here is the rub. Like the NATO eastward expansion and the war, they do what they believe they know/can/should and expect X/Y/Z. But they never take responsibility for the consequences or implications of their doing. Their results, as the past 3 decades manifest, are that they are hurting other people while hurting their own people. The only net beneficiaries are these individual politicians who love to play God in front of humanity. And the western MSM is definitely either their enabler or complicit.

As Warren Buffet likes to say that we will see who are actually naked when the tide fades.
