He's actually one of the more tolerable American historians of USSR. Unlike most American academics, he has a working class background and even though he's a class traitor he's at least somewhat sympathetic to proletarian interests.

He understands very little about China, but is, unlike most American commentators on contemporary geopolitics, not an imperialist white supremacist. He at least pretends not to hate Chinese people.
