Western reporting would have been all over this if the people being affected were Hong Kongers or Mainland Chinese in China. They'll showcase the significance of the situation as dystopia, cruel, insidious, and the cruelty of the See See Pee.

But this situation is just darn sad and infuriating at the same time. I wish Beijing can make the situation tenable for these workers because in turn it'll help the central government's image as the real "people's government" and maybe it'll even open the eyes of some of the anti-China woke crowd.

Shouldn't they be able to goto the quarantine hotels? Seems like they are forcing every covid positive into treatmeant so not sure why they are out there unless they are there illegally.

A new book published in ROC on history of spicy food in China. For political reasons the editor decided to do a find and replace on all instances of "mainland" with "China" and not even bother proof reading afterwards which resulted in this hilarious passage which claims Christopher Columbus discovered "New China".

Lockheed Martin will still get the rare earths they need even if it is by subterfuge. The US got titanium from the Soviet Union which they claimed was for golf clubs and they used it for the SR-71. But this will increase their costs to get those materials that's for sure.
In the long run China needs to put as much rare earth derived components manufacture in China proper as possible and avoid selling the base material directly. This will toughen their sanctions effectiveness.
For other countries to take China's sanctions and threats seriously, China has to be able to enforce them. China consolidated its rare earth companies last year, most likely in preparation for just this kind of sanctions (for better control of exports). I'm guessing users of rare earth worldwide (at least for large quantities) are probably pretty well known in the industry. China most likely has also prepared for a few years already just for this moment.

With all the nasty and tough talking on China and Russia, the article ends with a whimper:

"No matter how testy relations become, we should remember that the biggest threats we face today — climate change, the pandemic and nuclear proliferation — threaten Russia and China, too."

China needs to play the same game US been playing...

Accuse the US gov of providing rare earths to these banned companies and use that as pretext for an eventual blanket ban of rare earths to all of America, start with demanding US provide evidence that its not secretly funneling rare earth to Lockheed and Raytheon etc

How many ethnic Chinese work for these defence contractors? If its sizeable then enforce a permanent lifetime ban that prevents anyone who ever worked at these companies of setting foot back in China ever again, extend it to their immediate families as well. If you help the enemy destroy your homeland then you dont deserve to ever come back to or step foot into the motherland.

I think you want the opposite. You want as many of them to come back to China as possible.

Yes for folks who already work/worked at these places, but going forward apply it to new employees of these firms... as a deterrence for being disloyal to the motherland since there are still too many ABC drinking the CIA kool aid...

So for example a 29 year old Chinese American whose parents are from China, he is out looking for a job, if he gets hired by US defence contractor then his parents wont ever be allowed to go back to China again... etc

That is why China should ban Japanese cars including those manufactured locally. Then export Chinese EV to Japan and Germany, thereby displacing Japanese car makers.
Free market economy will take care of it. Once Germany led Europe transition to LNG and all other mineral imports in free market. than Japanese and Koreans will feel the pinch. i have doubts Japanese manufacturing survive in current form.
