Congress Proposes $500 Million for Negative News Coverage of China

The effort to counter China’s ‘malign influence’ would fund negative coverage of China’s Belt and Road Initiative—while also beefing up the U.S.’s international lending.

Meant to “combat Chinese disinformation,” the bill would direct funding to the U.S. Agency for Global Media, a U.S.-run foreign media service, as well as local outlets and programs to train foreign journalists.

For example, the Senate bill aims to crowd out Chinese investment in developing countries, and also encourages criticism of China’s projects in those markets.

The Senate bill aims to produce more anti-China media for regions where it says the Chinese Communist Party and other rivals are promoting “manipulated media markets.” It notes that the sponsored news will be “independent.”

One subtitle of USICA creates a “Countering Chinese Influence Fund” totaling $1.5 billion over a five-year period, with more than a third of funds aimed at media outlets.

The push to counter China, the subtitle explains, should “raise awareness of and increase transparency regarding the negative impact of activities related to the Belt and Road Initiative.” It should also urge “support for market-based alternatives in key economic sectors, such as digital economy, energy, and infrastructure.”

I´m speechless. There are already many fake news, that I can read everyday.
The funds are one third for the media outlets and the rest probably for the NGO´s, which nearly all of them receives funds from NED and Soros. Most of the NGO´s are corrupt and not independent!

Hi. Just to be clear, we're talking about criticism of current government policies, not events from more than a century ago.

No reasonable person would claim that because a country did a bad thing at some point in history, neither its government nor citizens may ever criticise contemporary events somewhere else in the world, regardless of how much time has passed.

After all, we can't change the past, we can only modify current and future behaviour.
To be clear, we also hold the US to account for the genocide of hundreds of thousands of iraqi's during the conquest of iraq. This was still happening even less than 10 years, while many people on this forum definitely weren't around for either the great leap forward or whatever happened in Tiananmen in 1989, which like you said, is old history.

Now surely, you must agree that reparations in the hundreds of billions must be paid for the false aggression committed by the america against another fully sovereign country. Here, I dont think anybody can be in reasonable dispute.

"At the request of Ms. Minister, I told her about our relations with the People’s Republic of China, including the latest talks held in Beijing between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping," the top Russian diplomat said.

In other words - fuelling anti-Chinese racism in African and Asian countries. I wonder how many ethnic Chinese will be killed because of this?

China should reciprocate, support anti-American movements around the world. Then again, America's actions and foreign policy does a good enough job of that.

This is just the "public" budget .., there are prob billions of $ funded elsewhere.

I find it amusing and a form of gaslighting(?)/brainwashing that the China watchers call random pro-china people on wumao when their biography describes them as working for human right watch, think tank, military complex, coping political party, news outlet, their entire social media history is "china bad" (like who does this if they were not paid?) ...

If the Ukraine crisis does boil over the top then the propaganda campaign basically dead for years. Not that war is a good thing but the energy price is going to decimate Africa and South East Asia economy and probably topple a few nations due to it.

Isn’t it more productive to spend it on tech and infrastructure? If you can built better things than China you can achieve the same propaganda results legitimately.
